3.0 out of 5 starsClive Cussler Wannabe
Reviewed in the United States ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ on December 21, 2019
I've enjoy reading Clive Cussler thrillers for nearly 20 years . . . and have been spellbound by them al. . . until this one, that is. The premise of this story is great, but is written in a cookie-cutter mode. The author of this story is unimaginative and seems to be a quick series of stories attempting to bring about the explosive, yet expected end. I finished this book in the hope that my interest could be held based upon Cussler's previous endeavors, but I was sorely disappointed. Will the future bring better results? I would hope so, I've put my hard earned cash and precious time into Mr. Cussler and hope that I won't be disappointed next time.

4.0 out of 5 stars My new favorite Cabrillo novel
Reviewed in the United States ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ on June 2, 2022

Final Option is another fantastic entry in the Oregon series, and my favorite one so far. The Oregon crew find themselves framed for numerous sea attacks by Cabrillo's ex-CIA partner, who has gone rogue and has an 'Oregon' ship of his own with all of the same capabilities. It's an action packed and engaging story that had me frantically turning pages to get to the end. The climatic naval battle between the two ships is excellent and has a very satisfying conclusion.

Given the events here this seems to be a reset of sorts for this series, and I'll be curious to see how things go in the next entry. I might be mistaken, but I believe this was the last book Cussler had a hand in writing before his unfortunate passing, at least in the Oregon Files. If that was the case, this is a fitting finale for a wonderful author that will be greatly missed.

4.0 out of 5 stars A real page turner

I started reading Clive Cussler over twenty years ago and then, as prices skyrocketed for his books; I started looking elsewhere. At that point, I was up-to-date and enjoyed his stories. Lately, I've returned as pricing is now more reasonable...and the books are older, too, so I'm not seeing repetitive storylines that other reviewers are complaining about. There are also dozens of books in both series that I haven't read yet.

FINAL OPTION captivated me and kept my interest throughout. Juan Cabrillo and his Oregon crew had their hands full in this story, and several times, I thought it would be the end of them. Their adversary had planned everything and ensured he had the odds stacked in his favor. They set many traps for the Oregon crew. Will they all survive THE FINAL OPTION?

Highly recommend this book to all interested in historical fiction and adventures on the high seas.

5.0 out of 5 stars Juan Cabrilloโ€™s most dangerous opponent yet!
Reviewed in the United States ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ on February 2, 2020

Juan Cabrillo and his intrepid crew of the Oregon (decrepit tramp steamer on the outside, super hi-tech and luxurious spy ship on the inside) face their most dangerous opponent yet, that being an unwelcome blast from the past, i.e. a former partner from Juanโ€™s CIA days, thought to have been long dead, who has resurfaced, and who has not only (1) resurrected a devilishly powerful long-forgotten WWI-era mind control device, but (2) indeed built a carbon copy of the Oregon and is using it to frame Juanโ€™s crew for the sinkings of several vessels (including a U.S. Navy nuclear submarine) and even the abduction of Cabrilloโ€™s own boss!

Harrowing and engaging, and keeps the pages turning.

RANDOM STREAM OF CONSCIOUSNESS NOTES AND OBSERVATIONS:

โ€”p. 1: Um, were German submarines in either World War ever actually assigned names as opposed to mere alphanumeric designators (like U-20, U-505, etc.)?

โ€œIrre Waffeโ€ = Insanity Weapon

โ€”p. 9: South Africanโ€“made Vektor R5 assault rifles!

โ€œIn fact, they were destined for Nicaraguan rebels who were going to use them in fighting the corrupt socialist government that was allowing the drug cartels to run wild.โ€ Down with Daniel Ortega!

โ€”p. 23: โ€œHe was looking forward to a generous cut of Brazilโ€™s best prime rib and a bottle of well-aged cabernet sauvignon at a cigar bar and jazz club later that evening.โ€ Aahh, Juan Cabrillo, Bon Vivant!

โ€”p. 38: โ€œand a baggy T-shirt that had the name of one of his favorite heavy metal bands, Nuclear Lobotomy, who, according to the bloody lettering on the shirt, toured with another band called Hate Gorgon.โ€ Haha, creative.

โ€”p. 66: โ€œRaven used to be an Army Military Police investigator, and nothing escaped her observation.โ€ In other words, Army Criminal Investigative Division (CID)?

โ€”p. 68: โ€œโ€œTangerine liqueur from Madagascar,โ€ nice one.

โ€”p. 203: filet mignon with bรฉarnaise sauce, 007 would approve!

โ€”p. 262: Er, wouldnโ€™t Chinese sailors be using โ€œkilometresโ€ instead of โ€œmiles?โ€

โ€”p. 266: โ€œThen he realized that the movie playing was The Princess Bride. But in this case, all of the major male charactersโ€™ faces had been replaced with the face of Shrek. Although it was strange to hear the green ogre say, โ€˜Hello, my name is Inigo Montoya,โ€™ the effect was seamless.โ€ Haha.

Clive Cussler has done it again with this book. I'm slowly adding his series to my collection and each book is a amazing. With a few exceptions, you can just about jump into any of his books and don't have to read them in order, they'll make sense by themselves

Sad to see the Oregon's demise, but I am sure that there will be a worthy replacement to take on some other grand adventures.
