I have been a longtime MHC fan. I am 44 and have been reading the paperbacks with my mom since I was 12. So, already a fan, but Alafair Burke is a breath of fresh air and really adds that something extra to this Under Suspicion Series. I have followed it since I've Got You Under My Skin and I hope there are many more books to come.

You Don't Own Me has one of those 'WHAAAAT??' moments that makes you think back to the beginning. And then you are on pins & needles until that final moment. You definitely don't feel cheated with this book!

Laurie Moran, producer of a television series Under Suspicion that attempts to solve cold case murders through the pressure of on-air interviews, is approached by the Bell’s, whose famous doctor son was shot in his driveway. They demand that she prove that his wife Kendra killed him. Kendra has had mental health issues affecting her behavior and cannot really explain large cash withdrawals, but she has never been charged. Is this a chance for her to clear her name?

It turns out that the circle of Dr. Bell’s interactions was wider than commonly known. And some of those people have a lot to lose if the nature of those contacts comes to light. Laurie and her show staff slowly uncover the sensitive information, but not without putting herself in danger.

The story is not particularly compelling; the plot is pretty predictable. And the characters lack appeal – don’t seem realistic at times. Mediocre book in a word.

I’ve read the other books in these series, and it’s nice catching up with Laurie et al. However, you can read this as a stand-alone story; the authors do go over some details from prior books in the collection so that new readers get an idea of how Alex, Laurie, Grace, Jerry, and others came to this point in their lives.

This book was different from the previous ones in that there’s more focus on Laurie, partly because she’s acquired the attention of a guilty party and her life is in danger. In the other stories, the Under Suspicion show starts the filming with family and suspects much sooner; in this tale, filming doesn’t get underway until around 70% of the novel. With that, I felt like Laurie was the star of this book, more so than in the other books where her storyline was running in the background of the murder mysteries.

In terms of the case being covered in Under Suspicion, I had an idea as to what happened, but there are some twists regarding the depth of the entanglement. There is also something that happens kind of out of left field - it ties into things mentioned early on so it’s not unreasonable, but it gives a curveball that you probably won’t see coming until right before it happens. I finished the book with a smile on my face and I hope that there will be more in the series.

5.0 out of 5 stars Mysterious Stalkers and Political Intrique Make Another Cold Case Hot
Reviewed in the United States on November 10, 2018

When the murder investigation of prominent New York physician Martin Bell goes cold, his parents approach protagonist Laurie Moran in hopes she will feature the case on her television series, "Under Suspicion." Laurie has a remarkable record of solving cold cases while producing her show. For each episode to work, there have to be multiple suspects who wish to tell their stories on camera, hoping to have their names cleared. Initially, Laurie is reluctant to take this particular case, as there appears to be only one viable suspect, Dr. Bell's widow Kendra. As Laurie tries not to rush to judgment, other scenarios begin to form in her mind. Could the good doctor have patients or survivors angry enough to kill him? Was Martin having an affair which could lead to the rage of a jealous spouse? Authors Mary Higgins Clark and Alafair Burke tease out these theories and more. I enjoyed reading the latest developments in Laurie's personal life with her son Timmy, father Leo, and fiancee Alex, who has just been named a federal judge. Political intrigue and clandestine stalkers heighten the suspense and provide a very satisfying read. Mary Higgins Clark, you did it again!

5.0 out of 5 stars Love Her Work!

I will never get tired of reading Mary Higgins Clark. I bought her very first book, 'Where Are The Children?', when it came out in 1975. I was a senior in high school and loved it! I've read it several times since then, too. I never, ever miss one of her books. She is 91 and has been on the bestseller lists for over 40 years now.

She began writing a series with Alafair Burke 5 years ago. These books, the Under Suspicion series, document the producers of a cold case news program and how they choose cases that have long grown cold, get together with everyone involved, and try to solve these crimes. I enjoy them very much. To me, they read like Mary Higgins Clark all by herself. But then, I am a huge fan.

5.0 out of 5 stars Don’t Tell Me What To Do, Don’t Tell Me What To Say

“Don't tell me what to do
And don't tell me what to say
Please, when I go out with you
Don't put me on display…”
Grace

This is the fifth novel featuring Laurie Moran, who works for a reality TV show, Under Suspicion, investigating cases that have gone cool, not exactly cold. She is contacted by Dr. Robert and Cynthia Bell. The Bells’ son, Martin, had been shot in his driveway in Manhattan. Martin’s wife, Kendra, had become a suspect, but she was not charged. She and Martin had two children, and the grandchildren were uppermost in the senior Bell’s minds. This had been the second time Laurie was asked to look into Martin’s murder, and she was not anxious to become embroiled in the couple’s vendetta against their daughter-in-law. But, she reconsidered.

Laurie Moran, had become engaged to her show’s former host, Alex, since our last encounter with her. They were planning a summer wedding, and waiting for Alex’s confirmation to a federal judicial appointment. This new case would take time away from the planning, but Alex was understanding.

In the process of the investigation, Laurie discovers Martin wasn’t a perfect person, and his personal life was full of secrets of his own. Everyone has secrets, but some are more deplorable than others. Kendra Bell had taken the brunt of a bad marriage, and, now the brunt of all the accusations as the person most likely to have killed Martin. We follow along, as Laurie uncovers clues, finds her own safety at risk, and she and Alex are placed in jeopardy. Expect the unexpected.

This is a very satisfying mystery from the authors, Mary Higgins Clark and Alafair Burke. They have provided Laurie Moran, the protagonist, with a winning personality, and I found I was entranced with her professional and personal life.

I love this series. Laurie and her team are solving another cold case. There are lies being told, murder, deceit, greed, all the elements that make a great story. A Senator, a medical doctor, a con man ,and many more- all great characters There are twists that keep your interest all the way thru. The story moves along nicely, no filler pages. I certainly hope we get to read more in this series, it's just that good!

4.0 out of 5 stars Satisfying for the genre

As a guide, to me, three stars means "good, I liked it." More, if you're a fan of romantic suspense novels, Mary Higgins Clark's lifelong specialty, you'll probably enjoy this, too. I've read a number of her books, though not recently. She's taken on co-writers now, and except for the odd passage or so, where I felt the editorial hand a bit heavy on the page, this novel did not disappoint. But why not four or five stars? Please don't take their absence as a condemnation of this or any other genre. It's mostly my sense of a lack of consistent pacing, or rather sluggish pacing here and there. Unwanted (by me) details of domestic and emotional life, an overabundance of "backstory" and flashbacks. Yet these features go along with what's now called "the domestic thriller." Emphasis on domestic and office life, not sexy romance, in this novel. Fine by me. The protagonist of this series (I haven't read any others in it) is a young-middle-aged producer of a true crime TV show. Nice update from the old gumshoe detectives. In fact, we have the usual contemporary gadgets in play--the cell phone, the messaging, the apps, etc. Author doesn't assume we readers know how to handle all that tech stuff, so we get step-by-step instructions, in a sense. That's what I mean by unnecessary detail. Makes the entire novel seem a lot more musty than it actually is, imho. The plot? There is one! It's well worked-out and surprising enough to merit a satisfied reader's nod. Yup, all makes sense, I sort of figured it out early on, then a twist and I figured nah, another twist--love this for its sensible yet surprising twists. Great beach reading--or anywhere else, for that matter. Okay, I just gave it a fourth star.

4.0 out of 5 stars I enjoyed this 6th installment of the Under Suspicion Book Series.

I liked the surprise ending of the book and further continuance of the Laurie-Alex saga. The criticism that I have is someone should hsve proofread this story a bit better. For instance, suddenly in this book Alex was 21 (correct) when his parents were killed but his brother Andrew was 19 when in earlier books he was 17. Then, Kendra was portrayed in a prior novel as having travelled to NYC and was treated to a fabulous stay when she met with Laurie to "sign paperwork" which she cockily refused to do because her lawyers had told her that she might lose custody of her children, giving the reader the impression she was indeed her husband's murderer and she only came to NYC for what she could get and Laurie was well rid of her. In this novel, she is pictured as a totally different person. A better person who is finally getting her life together except for 1 thing!! Of course, there were some typos but I don't usally mind those as long as there aren't too many. I only gave it 4 stars because of the poor continuity.

I was aware of Mary Higgins Clark books since I listened to books on tapes year ago. I enjoyed them, but times have changed. In the past few years I have found many different writers that are more interesting. This book dragged on and on without ay reason I could see except to fill the pages of a book. There were many different people that one might guess "who done it", but none of them did. Only until the final pages do we find out who the mystery man Mike was. Turns out we have to read a few more pages to find out who the killer is and why. Never heard of him throughout the book and I found the ending anti climatic to say the least. Unfortunately I bought two books by this author so will read the next one, if I can endure. Correction. We do learn who the surprise killer was, but the person stalking Laura was unheard of previously until the final pages. Another attempt to add more pages to a book.
