2.0 out of 5 starsSuspension of belief is needed to read this book.

Warning. Suspension of disbelief (also called the willing suspension of disbelief) is the willingness of a reader to ignore critical thinking in order to enjoy a story. This will be required to enjoy this book.
Red War by Kyle Mills has a plot so fantastical, so ridiculous, outlandish and unbelievable that only the true true Mitch Rapp fan can enjoy. The dozens of unbelievable coincidence are only outdone by the improbable plotline where the head of Russia is willing to start a nuclear war in order to keep himself in office. However ridiculous the plot is and ham handed march to its conclusion, Kyle Mills does have a talent for character dialog and development as well as descriptive action scenes though many of the action scenes are as fantastical as the plot. I got a real chuckle out of the Russian character removing the living liver of his enemy and sending it to the United States so his wife could have a liver transplant. As I was reading this I was thinking, my God this guy must be having some kind of drug-induced dream as part of this sequence but it was actually part of the plot!
I paid $13.95 for the Kindle of the edition of this book so I'm forcing myself to read it to the end just so that I can say I did. I will say I have loved the Mitch Rapp  series from when Vince Flynn was the author.  I also have enjoyed some of the Kyle Mills versions, but this book has put me off him in a big way and I will not be buying any more from Mills.

Kyle Mills mimics the writing style of Vince Flynn well. The action, plot, and character development are good. However, I cannot believe Mitch is with Claudia and the scenes of them playing house are cheesy and annoying. Other than that this is a good book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Pretty good, but not Rapp at his best

I didn't love this book, but it held my interest and had a few surprises and suspenseful moments. While the plot may seem far-fetched, it looks somewhat plausible in light of the war in Ukraine. "Maxim Krupin" shared a lot of characteristics with "Vladimir Putin".

I don't get the reviews that say "Rapp is barely in this book". I half expected that to be the case as I started reading, but did not find that to be true. The book featured shifting viewpoints in much the same way all the Rapp novels have done. Rapp is definitely the main character.

When Grisha Azarov was introduced a few books ago, I wondered if Kyle Mills was planning to make Mitch a more behind the scenes character with Azarov becoming a more active field agent. Rapp must be 50-ish by now and is not getting any younger. Daniel Silva had to put Gabriel Allon in the Mossad planning role because that character is now in his early 60's and can't get beaten up in every novel any longer. I don't know how long Mitch will remain a field agent, but I doubt that Azarov will take his place. For one thing, he's a fairly boring character. Because Azarov is a PED enhanced agent, he has no personality and and lacks actual skills when he is not on the PEDs. There are several moments in this book in which Mitch worries that Azarov can't hold it together enough to complete the assignment. Maybe as the stories go on, they will just hope we don't think about how old Rapp is getting?

Speaking of "far-fetched", one thing that bothered me is that when Rapp and Azarov are undercover as wolf habitat researchers in Russia, Rapp has "Mitch" as his undercover first name. I know Vince Flynn came up with "Mitch Kruse" as Rapp's alias, but at this point in Rapp's career EVERYBODY seems to know who Mitch Rapp is. If a Russian agent is on the lookout for spies, and one of them is named "Mitch" and he played Lacrosse in college, that's an obvious red flag.

I have not given up on the series yet, and am starting the next book already. No, the books are not quite what they were when Vince wrote them, but I still like the viewpoint of the books and will probably keep reading them.

5.0 out of 5 stars Kyle Mills returns with the Best Mitch Rapp thriller yet!!!

Mitch Rapp is back in Red War in what I believe to be Kyle Mills’ best work yet. A task I didn’t think was possible after my personal favorite Order to Kill since taking over writing duties in 2014 for the series. Red War starts off with the Russian President Maxim Krupin watching his country evolve into something a little more daring, something that just a few years ago would have been unthinkable. The “pampered” new generation is growing stronger and their numbers increasing while Krupin barely sees through blurred vision and the increasing waves of nausea he keeps experiencing literally force him to sit down as he loses his balance. All due to health issues he is forced to hide from his country, his government, even those closest to him as to not show any weakness they may be able to exploit. All of this to paint a desperate man utilizing drastic measures to cling to power.

Starting off with Grisha Azarov, the Russian super-soldier created by Kyle Mills in OTK returns and is quite a changed man. No longer is he taking performance enhancing drugs and training regularly, no longer is he a calculating killer we met in OTK. Still very dangerous, but clearly not in peak physical shape. Or I should say not in the peak physical shape he is used to. Once in the book, due to all the events that have occurred, Grisha is questioning his ability to operate. Mitch is trying to get to the bottom of it, attempting to see if this is pure mental drawback or if he is truly lacking in the physical arena. So, Mitch asks him something along the lines of… “What are we talking about here, Grisha. Could you still run a marathon? Grisha responds with “Of Course.” “How fast?” Mitch asks. Grisha does his terminator thing and calculates a precise time that is literally 50% faster than the average time of U.S. marathon runs in 2016, and 13 minutes slower than the current marathon record holder. (yes, I googled that for this review). Suffice to say, he is still one of the top operators in the world and I look forward to more of Grisha Azarov in future Mitch Rapp thrillers.

Now, on to the main guy, Mitch. Kyle does a wonderful job keeping the attention on him and keeping our favorite American Assassin at the top of his game. In Red War, we get to see Mitch do something he hasn’t done in a very long time. He goes toe-to-toe with a very strong adversary, and our hero does not disappoint. All that training we read about so long ago in American Assassin, then mentioned briefly again in Act of Treason, his skills are still there, and Kyle does not disappoint. His humor, his tactics, his training are all explored and there is absolutely no sign of him slowing down any time soon.

Irene Kennedy is of course back, and she deserves a shout out due to a very impressive spy maneuver she executes that I did not see coming. When I am reading, there is nothing more fulfilling then being surprised in a scene. Kyle manages to do that quite a few times in Red War, however one of the most surprising scenes involve Irene visiting a traveling Russian politician in his hotel room.

Red War is a fast moving, action filled thriller that takes us from the jungles of Costa Rica, to the beaches in Latvia, to the dangerous terrains in Russia’s mountainous no man’s land while delivering constant surprises, action, and suspense. Kyle Mills has once again delivered what I believe to be this year’s number one thriller. Pre-order your copy today and set aside a day, this is one of those must-read thrillers that you cannot put down and must finish in one sitting.

John Walker
5.0 out of 5 stars Mitch Rapp and Grisha Azarov in a Thriller of Intrigue, Diplomacy, and Military Confrontation
Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on August 7, 2019

This is the fourth novel in the Mitch Rapp saga written by Kyle Mills, who took over the franchise after the death of Vince Flynn, its creator. On the cover, Vince Flynn still gets top billing (he is now the “brand”, not the author), but Kyle Mills demonstrates here that he's a worthy successor who is taking Rapp and the series in new directions.

In the previous novel,
Enemy of the State , Rapp went totally off the radar, resigning from the CIA, recruiting a band of blackguards, many former adversaries, to mount an operation aimed at a nominal U.S. ally. This time, the circumstances are very different. Rapp is back at the CIA, working with his original team headed by Scott Coleman, who has now more or less recovered from the severe injuries he sustained in the earlier novel  Order to Kill , with Claudia Gould, now sharing a house with Rapp, running logistics for their missions.

Vladimir Krupin, President/autocrat of Russia, is ailing. Having climbed to the top of the pyramid in that deeply corrupt country, he now fears his body is failing him, with bouts of incapacitating headaches, blurred vision, and disorientation coming more and more frequently. He and his physician have carefully kept the condition secret, as any hint of weakness at the top would likely invite one or more of his rivals to make a move to unseat him. Worse, under the screwed-down lid of the Russian pressure cooker, popular dissatisfaction with the dismal economy, lack of freedom, and dearth of opportunity is growing, with popular demonstrations reaching Red Square.

The CIA knows nothing of Krupin's illness, but has been observing what seems to be increasingly erratic behaviour. In the past, Krupin has been ambitious and willing to commit outrages, but has always drawn his plans carefully and acted deliberately, but now he seemed to be doing things almost at random, sometimes against his own interests. Russian hackers launch an attack that takes down a large part of the power grid in Costa Rica. A Russian strike team launches an assault on Krupin's retired assassin and Rapp's former nemesis and recent ally, Grisha Azarov. Military maneuvers in the Ukraine seem to foreshadow open confrontation should that country move toward NATO membership.

Krupin, well aware of the fate of dictators who lose their grip on power, and knowing that nothing rallies support behind a leader like a bold move on the international stage, devises a grand plan to re-assert Russian greatness, right a wrong inflicted by the West, and drive a stake into the heart of NATO. Rapp and Azarov, continuing their uneasy alliance, driven by entirely different motives, undertake a desperate mission in the very belly of the bear to avert what could all too easily end in World War III.

This is a well-crafted thriller which broadens the scope of the Rapp saga into Tom Clancy territory. Things happen, which will leave the world in a different place after they occur. It blends Rapp and Azarov's barely restrained loose cannon operations with high-level diplomacy and intrigue, plus an interesting strategic approach to pledges of defence which the will and resources of those who made them may not be equal to the challenge when the balloon goes up and the tanks start to roll. And Grisha Azarov's devotion to his girlfriend is truly visceral.

I found the plot of this book largely unrealistic and bordering on fantasy at times. The writing is frequently amateur, and the Kindle edition I read contained a lot of editorial errors, inaccurate references, and occasionally misleading writing. Certainly not an "unputdownable" book, in my view, but I did finish it while shaking my head at times. Kyle Mills is no Vince Flynn by any measure.

Strange parallels to today's political landscape and international relations. Great insight into the dark world beyond the curtain; realities that exist but aren't seen. Kyle Mills has done a masterful job of continuing Vince Flynn's fantastic Mitch Rapp series!

This was written in 2018 if I recall but just reading it now (10/22). Even more poignant considering all that is going on as of late. Great action and a real page turner!
