I wanted it to be good

This is one of those things you buy into because you want to support a good artist and you want to believe the hype. I've been enjoying Cole since, about '07 and he makes some really good music. This just isn't his best, or even close. It's not that I hate it, or that I'm having one of those "he was better before he was famous" moments, it just isn't as good as you would expect it to be. The lyrical content is, well it's just not all that impressive. I was hoping for an album with a message; and while there are glimpses of a good messages throughout this, there's quite a bit of contradiction too.
With that being said, lyrical content isn't what everyone is looking for, so how about the beats? There's a couple good ones. As a whole though, this isn't an album that's fun to bump all the way through. You definitely have to pick and chose the songs here, (and skip all of the bonus material, it does nothing for the album).
It's a playable album, it's not trash by any means, but its just not great. There's nothing memorable here, next year I won't want to play this at all-- which is a shame because I've had some of Cole's mix-tapes on rotation for almost 6 years now.
