5.0 out of 5 starsLovely second chance for Tegan and Elise
Reviewed in the United States on September 6, 2017
Tegan and Elise's second chance to happiness. Tegan's story couldn't have been better!! One of my favorites in Lara's writing are the strong females that she writes and boy did she write a strong female in Elise! Elise is a widow having lost her husband to a Rogue. Her whole life is wrong because of what the Merak and his Rogue nation have done to her family. She is determined to fulfill her promise to her family to avenge their deaths.

Elise is a Breedmate but she is also human therefore she can go out in the day time. Elise moves out of the Darkhaven where she lives and moves into a depilated apartment. Elise's curse/gift is that she can hear other human's thoughts. Using this curse/gift she hunts minions (human slaves made by Marek by draining them to a thread of their lives) and kills them. She always goes out during the day and is back in her apartment before dark. One day, in blood doused clothing, she doesn't make it back to her apartment before dark and is scented by two Rogues who immediately go after her. Tegan also scented her from the roof tops where he was hunting Rogues. When he found the source of the scent he immediately knew it was Elise. Tegan had given Elise a ride back to the Darkhaven where she lived on a visit to the Order's compound so he was familiar with her scent and attracted to her. Tegan interfered, saving her, and taking her back to her apartment.

Tegan was surprised how Elise's curse/gift affected her, especially since she had not fed from her mate in 5 years. Elise got horrific migraines because the voices in her head would not stop coming. Tegan was surprised how she had to live in order to be able to survive outside of the Darkhaven. After that their story begins. This is probably the most intriguing book so far. Just when you think the story has hit it's peak another unraveling takes you on another suspenseful journey.

As has been the case with all the books so far in this series the writing is flawless and flows beautifully. Characterization is three dimensional. All the characters are wonderfully written. We are introduced to a new character in this book that I absolutely loved.

On I go to read Rio's story. Already it looks very promising.

3.0 out of 5 starsGood, but dialogue gets in the way
Reviewed in the United States on August 18, 2009
For what they are, these are great reads. Adrian has really created a pretty interesting mythology to serve as the back drop for her unabashed fantasy romance novels. This was my favorite so far mainly because this heroine had the most interesting backstory yet. There was a darkness and drive to her that was absent in the others. The biggest stumbling block is the cornball B-grade macho movie dialogue that spews forth during the action sequences. In and of themselves, they're pretty exciting. But, when a main character in the previous installment stopped in mid-fight to actually quote "Die Hard," my eye-rolling took me completely out of the moment. And that happens a lot in the series. Too bad.

5.0 out of 5 stars More exciting than the others, love the series

This book really had no slow or boring parts as the previous book did. Tegan was frustrating most of the way through the book with his pushing away Elise most of the story. This one had quite a bit of excitement and Elise was more a part of the action than the other females have been in previous books. Again, romance, love and sex didn't happen until way past the halfway point which is a little disappointing. I love a HEA but so far, none of the books have looked back into the different couples to have babies and that would be awesome to read about them all having babies and raising them in the Order. Maybe Ms. Adrian will eventually tackle that project so I won't have this feeling of not having the whole story on the different couples. Babies always make the tough hot guys more human to the readers. On to the next in the series.

This breed book is excellent. It has love-sex (great descriptions) and lots of kick ass. All her books are above average but this one gives Elise the strength and courage she needs to revenge the one's she loved who were taken by a Gen one who shouldnt still be alive. Thank you for a great story.

The Story
Elise saw her rouge son killed infront of her eyes four months ago. She is now on a vendetta against the rouges and minions. Elise has been hunting and killing. One night she is out too late and is caught by a couple of rouges. Tegan comes to her rescue, unable to help himself he follows Elise to her new apartment. She has left the Darkhavens and now her gift is making her suffer. She has the ability to hear dark thoughts from humans. Tegan has a similar ability, but he has been practicing his apathy for centuries. These two are both wounded people by this war. Elise turns to Tegan for help and relief with her gift. Elise intercepts a package from a minion and it sends her and Tegan on a mission.

Thoughts
Tegan spends most of the book ignoring his feelings for Elise. Their connection is evident, these two are perfect for each other. They help heal each other from their sorrows. The book is fast paced. This one is more about the plot than the romance I think. Nevertheless, Tegan and Elise grow in this book. The plot thickens and is set up for the next book. Rio's book I believe. This isn't my favorite, but it is a good addition to the series.

This is the 3rd book in the Breed Series, an erotic vampire romance. It has also been my favorite so far. The hero, Tegan is a sexy dominant male and the heroine, Elise, is a petite, strong-willed, and brave woman. Right from the start we see how badass these two are. The story was filled with tense action that gripped me right up to the end; in fact I read it in one day staying up until 4am. I really liked this book because the author was able to make my heart drop, as if I was the one in love and i literally gasped when reading one of the more passionate trysts. My only complaint if I had one would be that I would have liked more sex early on - the 1st scene didng happen until nearly half of the way through. I'm hooked and plan to read Ms Adrian's next book in the series, "Midnight Rising" tonight.

Adding this author to my list of favorite erotic romance authors: Felicity Heaton, Larissa Ione, Caris Roane, Tina Folsom, Alexandra Anthony, and Kresley Cole. No order of preference there.

4.0 out of 5 stars Awakening works for me
Reviewed in the United States on September 5, 2010

I've read all in the series and Midnight Awakening is hands down a favorite. First and foremost, Elise is already clued into the breed world as she was a breedmate for years, so we don't have to skim our way through the perfunctory explanation, not to mention, the usual shock and doubt scenes that follow. That wears ... I suppose this is why I enjoyed Veil of Midnight, as well.

Adrian nails it with Tegan's character. The frighteningly strong, aloof guy with the haunting past ... And although Adrian attempts this with all her male leads, something just works with Tegan. Elise is a fantastic counterpart: intelligent, self-assured, capable (minus her 'gift' situation), and beautiful. She has clout and a long history in the breed community, which is refreshing to read. I would also like to add that I LOVED the fact that she has short hair! Thank you Ms. Adrian for writing a beautiful character who isn't sporting the long flowing locks.

This seems to be when The Midnight Breed finds its rhythm. There is something hauntingly beautiful in both the rough scars of Tegan and the raw wounds of Elise that make watching them find themselves in each other, while the world around them starts to explode captivating. I truly found this couple the best of the first three maybe more, and worth really digging into, especially when you consider the ramifications of their gifts.

There's a lot of pain Adrian has given them, and I like that they've been aware of each other for more than a minute. Definite recommend.

During a time when none of my favorite authors had new books out, and after having read a lot of wastes of money, I stumbled onto Lara Adrian's Shades of Midnight in a bookstore. Since then, I've ordered all her "Midnight Breed" books, although I have accidentally read them out of order. I read Midnight Awakening, and now am reading Kiss of Crimson. Her characters have such depth, and all the stories are full of plot, suspense and a lot of romance. I absolutely loved the story between Tegan, the deadliest vampire of the Order, and Elise, the vulnerable Darkhaven beauty who, after hundreds of years, made him fall in love again. These are all excellent books, hard to put down, and I am continually amazed at the imagination of the author. Great work! I'm wondering why, though, Twilight was such a hit, when these books were floating around out there? I think these would have made much better movies!

5.0 out of 5 stars Favorite of the series.

This is my favorite book in the series. Tegan is my favorite warrior, and Elise was a strong female lead with a solid back story and motivations for getting involved. I very much enjoyed their interactions as their relationship grew, and learning more about Tegan's past. The plot advancement was well-done, too. The only big negative for me was Andreas Reichen, who I just find irritating. I'm probably a minority opinion there, but any time these super-cultured, rich, supposedly charming-type characters show up, I just want to gag. Thankfully Tegan more than balanced him out, and Elise didn't fall for his lines. So yeah, good book! The series up to this point is quite solid, though after Rio's book I feel like it starts going downhill.

I came to this series late. Just now discovering it because I'm waiting on JR Ward, Laurel Hamilton, and Christine Feehan to write more books. Lol. I have read several other series but this one keeps getting better and better. It follows each warrior in finding his breedmate and fighting rogue vampires. I can't wait to see what else happens now. I think I might be hooked. 3 in and I have given them all 4 and 5 stars. I really like watching the breedmate move from appropriate sheltered female to strong tough in the midst of action female. Give this series a try. You might like it.
