Lost count how many times I’ve reread the “In Death” series, one of the most interesting cast of characters ever presented. Would recommend all in this series to everyone. My sister and I have been reading these for years and exchanging books as gifts. Eve Dallas is like no other, with so many layers of darkness and light. Roarke, with more money and influence than imaginable, and a dark past of his own, is the most unlikely of heroes to fall for a by-the-book futuristic cop.
Once you start you won’t be able to resist buying the next book, and the next….

So I am gonna start with the parts of this series that I liked and that made me keep reading even the times I wanted to smack the lead charecters or throw my reader in frustration or simply just went alright already we got it so please stop with these stupid repeating dreams.. THEY ARE BORING... or when another sex scene was there.. and wow I just made this series sound horrible... but it really isn’t.. it just have a lot of elements that are, in my opinion, really really stupid... but back to the good parts... I love the detective parts.. sure there are some plot overlaps in the books because okay how many different murders can you really imagine, but there are some that are truly spectactular. The Icove case being the most memorable.. but with that being said for crying out loud let Eve sleep at some point.. the amount of sleep jd wants us to think Eve survives by should make her brain not function nearly enough to be a good cop..

Now onto the things i hate in this series.. I will admit to liking romances.. or rather books that have some element of romance in them.. without it I rarely find a book interesting.. don’t know why.. but the “romance” in this book? I simply have no words... I first heard about these book because of a “best couples in books” list and roarke and eve was at the top.. after having read the series I cannot understand why... you put eve with roarke and you get the transformation from a steelspined intelligent cop to pathetic spineless doormat.. she lets Roarke do whatever he wants and even when she gets mad he just have to yell a bit about all he does for her and she caves... and this is most apparent when it comes to other women... here are some facts.. the series are 40 something books plus novellas but only covers about 3-4 years.. and in every single one of them Eve has to deal with a beautiful clever acomplished woman that has slept with her husband.. that is over 40 women in about 4 years she gets thrown into her face, many of them telling her how they where together how he was the best sex of their life how they would steal him from her if possible etc. that is about one woman a month she gets a graphic reminder of her husbands past. and ALWAYS roarke’s reaction is oh it was just sex no biggie.. and it is often remarked how these women are only a small fraction of the ones he’s had sex with.. he also constantly comments on beautiful women.. incl the ones he’s slept with.. like Eve says about one of his exes that she prob. paid for her body and he is all but how well spend those money where... and all of this Eve just accept.. in book 4 she comes home to see before mentioned bought body kiss her husband... and he does nothing, in fact laughs at her when she gets a little bit jealoux... and these sort of situations constantly happens.. he works with many of the women and a LOT of them wants him back... but Eve just has to deal... and then there is THE ex.. the one he was actually in love with.. the one he keeps meeting alone and not telling Eve about even though she told him she didn’t want him to.. you know basically cheats on her with even if he didn’t sleep with her... and again Eve does nothing... and in fact later on feels like she can’t tell Roarke how she didn’t like a woman because she reminded her of THE ex, because oh no what if it hurts HIS feelings... and in all of this we are ever only told about ONE, I repeat ONE of Eves former lovers.. and what happens? Well he’s in love with Eve and decides to kiss her (something one of Roarkes exes did to him in front of Eve without Roarke doing anything) and Eve pretty much punches him for doing it.. and Roarkes reaction? He goes balistic and ends up FIGHTING this other man that Eve so very clearly is not interested in... in other words Roarks past is okay but Eve’s is not? She should be okay with him having slept with half the women in the world but really how could she not be a pristine little virgin when he decided he wanted her... I can’t decide if this is general societal view on genderroles or just a really screwed up relationship.. probably both...

And while we are on relationships... Charles Monroe and Louise Dimatto... I refuse to believe if you love someone you are just going to be completely 100% okay with your significant other sleeping with other women, romancing them.. no matter how much you tell yourself it is only a job, it is not... as a man you can’t exactly fake being sexually aroused now can you.. you can’t go oh look at my super realistic strapon and no that is not my D hanging limp there it is a third ball... their relationship is not that of people who love each other.. it is one of two F buddies who think they love each other because they haven’t found one they actually do yet.. they’d know the difference...

Murder mysterious aren't my thing but this story had me in its grip within the first few pages.

I'm also not a fan of cop characters. They tend to be tough, hardcore and cold. Eve was pretty much the stereotypical cop but she had a little empathy and enough personality to be likeable.

I was glad the author put a disclaimer at the beginning, explaining how she wrote it in the 90s and thought the future was further away because it helped soften the cringe-factor when they mentioned how advanced things were in 2020 when we're not that advanced. We should be but we're not.

I usually read paranormal but I'll mix things up so I can read at least one more book in this series.

After coming off a couple of not so exciting romance novels this book was such a needed change! The plot started a little slow, but boy did it pick up! I wish the ending was a little different but all in all, a great read! I can’t wait to read more in the series! Detective Eve Dallas has my interest!

4.0 out of 5 stars A Good Detective Novel Set In The Future

“Naked in Death” is the first of a series authored by Nora Roberts using the name J D Robb. It is interesting in several different ways. It is set in the middle of the twenty first century. The protagonist is Eve Dallas a homicide detective. The book is of medium length and the narrative is fairly straightforward standard American conversational English. As such it makes a good candidate for an audiobook.

There is a certain amount of graphic violence, obscene street language, and graphic sex activity. I liked the book and am glad that I read it. Another reviewer stated that she did not like reading this novel before sleeping at night. That makes sense to me. There was particularly violent episode that I was reading late at night and had the same thoughts. There are some types of criminal activity that I find completely repugnant.

The author has also written romance novels. Her first romance novel that I am aware of is Irish Thoroughbred. Although the stories are very different, romance versus violent crime, I did recognize some artistic similarities. It occurs to me that Nora Roberts took some artistic ideas from the past and somewhat reshaped them and made use of them in a new crime novel. I am glad that I have read both novels.

From what I have read Nora Roberts is an extremely popular author. I think I can see why. Although I have only read a few of her novels they have a popular feel to them. They sort of remind me of a reading version of prime time television. Personally I would not classify them as high literature.

In summary, I liked this novel as a light, not necessarily fun, reading experience. I would put this in the second tier of literature, good, not great. I am glad to be familiar with the style of Nora Roberts, but for me, although she is successful and extremely popular, her novels are not in the top tier of literature. Thank You for taking the time to read this review.

I love this series. I enjoy re-reading them once in a while. The mysteries are good and am sometimes surprised at the guilty person. I love the imagination of the author on what is going on in the future and how the Eve Dallas world works. Thank you, JD Robb.

This engaging book is the first in a very extensive series of about 60 books. We follow Eve and Roarke, who are immersed in violence, mystery and intense sexual chemistry. There is an addictive storyline and very likeable characters.

This book is fantastic. Robb creates flawed but love able characters. The heroine is hard driving, straightforward by the book cop with a reformed criminal as a love interest. They are made for each other, two lost souls.

When I started this series I didn't have this review blog and I just realized I have been selfishly keeping this series to myself. I just finished reading the 51st book, and was reflecting on how much these characters have grown since the first book. So I pulled out the paperback to read and found the print too small to read. So now I have a project, to get the rest of these books on my kindle because sometimes I just want to do a reread.

In this book we meet not only the troubled NYPSD Lieutenant Eve Dallas but also the irresistible, charismatic, and gorgeous billionaire Roarke. All set in 2058, which at the time seemed like a long time into the future.

Eve is haunted by her last case in which she had to terminate the perpetrator, not because of him but the circumstances around it. She is expecting to go through the mandatory testing in the morning but her commander assigns her a top priority all data sealed case overriding the testing.

She is partnered with Captain Ryan Feeney, head of the electronics detective division, who was her mentor as she travailed the ranks. The victim Sharon DeBlass is Senator DeBlass' granddaughter and he thinks he can run things his way.

The biggest clue in this is the weapon, a .38 caliper Smith and Wesson handgun at one time standard police issue, now banned and a collector's item. There aren't many out there and the list of owners isn't very long.

One name that comes up as a possible owner of such gun and who's name also appears in the victim's address book is Roarke. Eve is confident she can get to talk to him although Feeney is skeptical.

She's unsuccessful until the funeral, and Roarke is surprised to find out she's a cop. His cop radar didn't go off and he's certainly attracted to this feisty police lieutenant.

Roarke invites Eve to see his collection and offer his weapon for testing. Now that was an interesting evening. I had forgotten how Summerset treated Eve in those first books.

More bodies are showing up, and with the first one sealed it limits what can be said to the press in an effort to gain public support. We meet Nadine Furst, the persistent journalist as she tries for more than just the press conference drivel.

We also meet Eve's best friend Mavis as she sings and dances at The Blue Squirrel an interesting venue, that also becomes her spot to meet with Nadine.

Things with Roarke heat up as Eve eliminates him as a suspect and there's many twists and turns before the pieces come together in this page turning read.

I will will be reading these in order all over again. It's fun to go back to the beginning and meet everyone.
