I really enjoyed the first three books in the series, but this one turned me off a bit. The crime story is decent, but the characterization of Roarke's sex appeal is overdone. No wife would allow her husband's former lover to slide "one slim white hand into [her husband's] mane of hair and [kiss] him silkily" while she just stands there, especially not one as strong as Eve Dallas. And, I cannot imagine a badass like Eve then agreeing to have lunch with the woman of little respect. And, no decent newlywed man fresh from his honeymoon would allow another woman that kind of liberty in front of his wife. We get it; Roarke has had sex with every beautiful woman he has ever met, but it doesn't need to be thrown in Eve's face in her own home.

5.0 out of 5 stars 4.5-stars: 'Rapture in Death' by J.D. Robb

Every month I look forward to reading another book from J.D. Robb’s In Death series for the #InDeathReadALong hosted by @PNRBookLoverReviews and @UTCBookBlog. This month is Rapture in Death, which is the fourth book to the series. It’s another installment that I fell in love with because it was hard to put down. It’s getting harder and harder to read only one book a month for the Read-A-Long.

The fourth book has Eve Dallas investigating three people that committed suicides. They should be closed cases, but Eve finds each suicide suspicious, especially after autopsies are done on the bodies. There’s a small burn on their brains, so Eve is determined to find out what drove a lawyer, engineer, and politician to kill themselves. There’s no stopping Eve from finding out the truth, even if she puts herself in danger again.

This installment is another perfect addition to the series. I enjoyed following Eve, Peabody, and Feeney on investigating these suicides, especially after Eve tries to save another person who committed suicide in the book in front of her. The person was acting strange, and this is why I agreed Eve was doing the right thing about investigating these deaths.

I started figuring out who could be behind everything after Eve encountered this person. There was something off with this person, especially how they reacted to Eve and Roarke being together. I love each antagonist that J.D. Robb writes in her stories because they are pure evil in their way. This one took it to the top. I was sick to my stomach towards the end of the book and what this antagonist had planned altogether.

Let’s not forget about Roarke and how much I adore his and Eve’s relationship. They’re married now, and they are supposed to be in the honeymoon phase, but Roarke knows Eve’s job is never done. It’s bad enough during their honeymoon is when one of the suicides took place. Be prepared for some steamy scenes in this book between the newly wedded couple. I love them as a couple, and I love how Roarke treats Eve and vice versa. These two were meant to be together, and I can’t wait to continue reading these books in the series.

Overall, this installment gets 4.5-stars, and I highly recommend it to Romantic Suspense/Thriller readers out there. Be prepared, though, because this is another book that will have you on the edge of your seat trying to figure out what is happening to these people committing suicide. Poor Eve and Roarke are caught in the crossfire again, but they can handle anything thrown at them.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Series Review! {NO Spoilers}

4.5 stars!

After basically years of seeing this series around and reading about this mystical Roarke, I gave in and decided to read the In Death Books. It was quite an undertaking, since when I started there were 33 books already released in the series, not counting short stories and novellas. Besides that, deciding to read this series was a big commitment in two fronts. One, I simply had to by 33 books and secondly, I would not be reading anything else until I was done. That's how psychotic I can be when it comes to book series.

December 2011 was when my journey began and by February 2012 I was done and now there is NO turning back. I am IN LOVE with this series! I not only obviously love Roarke, but I love Eve and all the secondary characters that make up this great story as well.

Yes, I have become irritated with Eve at times, but I adored being able to see her grow throughout the series. It has been quite a ride, but one I will never regret hopping aboard.

This series is a great mix of mystery, police drama and romance. I love every aspect of it, from the near futuristic setting, to the way J.D. Robb writes her prose. If there is one thing that bothers me, is that considering the series has 35 books published, the span of time that has passed is very short and I wish the lapse between books was a bit longer. But if you read the books throughout a longer period of time, it won't really matter, but reading them so close together made me wish for that longer lapse.

Eve is such a complex character. All that she has been through has made who she is, but her story is not less heartbreaking because of it. For that matter, so is Roarke's and the fact that these two found each other is nothing less than serendipity. They need each other and I am sure they would never have grown to be who they are in the series by book 35, if not for each other's presence in their lives. Not to mention the "family" they have built with their dear friends.

One of the biggest issues brought up in this series by J.D. Robb, is the Nature Vs. Nurture debate. I love it! It always makes me think and it is very satisfying to see these people that could have become something very wrong, rise above nature and blood, to become amazing people.

On the crime fighting aspect of the series, I find that Robb uses two types of narrative. Sometimes she carries more of a "Monk" style, where the perpetrator is clear if not early on, but soon. The other one is where we get a punch in the face when we finally find out out who it is. I really enjoy that she doesn't have only one style, since that always keeps me guessing =D

I LOVE this series and if you have yet to check it out, please do so! The first few books might not compel you completely, but keep reading! You won't regret it!

5.0 out of 5 stars About the forth book in this never ending series and it holds up as well at past and future novels. Great story tell Robb, she.

I’ve not read all the books in this series yet but am getting pretty close. Having read the reviews written on most of the books in this series by J.D. Robb, aka Nora Roberts, it becomes quite clear quite quickly that people either love or hate these books. And when you think about it that is the way it should be. What a boring reading life we would all have it all of our tastes were the same...ugh!

Now I am on of those that are a big fan of these books where are futuristic (just a bit) detective/police procedural books with a touch of romance thrown in from time to time. This work is not all that different from other J.S. Robb offerings.

This one deals with mind control via music/computer games. It is not as grizzly as other books in the series but murder there is never-the less. People are forced to do things such as leaping off of tall buildings or hanging themselves or – in the case of Eve and Roarke, somewhat change their sexual encounters – an not all for the good.

Even though this is only about the third or fourth book in this series we have all my favorite characters playing their usual role; Eve, Peabody, McNab, Roarke Mavis, Leonardo and yes, one of my favorites, Galahad, and a host of others readers who follow these stories will be quite familiar with. There is of course some new characters introduced cause hey; you have to have a bad guy or girls – right?

The book begins with Eve and Roarke returning form the honeymoon where on their return visit at a space station they encounter the first victim – an apparent suicide.

While this story does not move as fast as some of the others I have read in this series it is never-the-less still a stellar read and one that I more or less read non-stop from cover to cover – Being retired I can do stuff like that because the dogs in my lap could care less if I am sleeping or reading or just staring into space.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Early Days of Eve and Roarke's Marriage Combined with Murder
Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on January 18, 2018

FINAL DECISION: An enjoyable combination of relationship and crime mystery, RAPTURE IN DEATH deals with the early days of Eve and Roarke's marriage along with a series of "suicides" among people who seem to have no reason to want to die.

THE STORY: A series of suicides where each person dies with a mocking smile on his or her face doesn't sit well with Eve. She seems to find some brain abnormalities but no one can find a cause or whether or not someone is orchestrating these deaths. Just back from her honeymoon, Eve and Roarke settle down into their marriage while Eve (with Roarke's help) tries to figure out who is targeting high profile New Yorkers.

OPINION: This is one of the early books in the series that made this a superlative series. I believe that the best books in the series (and this is one of them) have a great balance between the personal issues of Eve (here she is adjusting to her new marriage) and a rousing crime that Eve solves (and the best books have her working directly with Roarke as much as possible).

This book still feels fresh after I've read it at least a dozen times over the years. Eve and Roarke are vibrant characters and the crime had a double twisty resolution. There are a lot of things going on, plenty of significant appearances by the secondary characters and just a great centering on Eve and Roarke.

I don't read these books as crime dramas or mysteries because I think that overall they are only just above average on those aspects because there is no real way to solve these mysteries on the clues given.  I read them as character driven stories about Eve and her life. This book does a great job of expanding on the characters in the series and thus is one of the better books in the series.

WORTH MENTIONING: Hubba Hubba!

CONNECTED BOOKS: RAPTURE IN DEATH is the fourth book in the In Death series. While the mystery in the book is self-contained, there are continuing relationship and personal journey stories that span the series and thus I recommend reading the books in order.

STAR RATING: I give this book 5 stars.

4.0 out of 5 stars Better and Better

I have fallen in love with this series and it's characters. So far they just keep getting better and better.

These stories take place in New York of 2058. There are new advancements in technology, medicine, transportation and even traveling off planet for business or pleasure. Guns are outlawed. Most diseases are non existent. Coffee, chocolate and beef are considered luxuries.

Homicide Lieutenant Eve Dallas and her billionaire husband are enjoying the last week of their honeymoon off planet at Roarke's newest resort. It is still in the construction phase, only minimal staff and construction workers are around, so it allows them to spend some quality time alone. But death always seems to find Eve. Even here, off planet and on her honeymoon, one of the techs working on the new resort has been found dead, an apparent self-termination.

After Eve, and Roarke return home, she is confronted with two more apparent self-terminations. None of these people exhibited any signs of being depressed or wanting to end it all. When Eve digs further into their files and looks into their autopsy photos, they all seem to have a couple of things in common. Gaming and a small "burn" on the frontal lobe of their brain. Now all Eve has to do is connect the seemingly un connectable. She knows they have been murdered, she's just not sure if she will be able to prove it.

Eve's best friend, Mavis is also back in all her colorful glory. She's venturing out on a new career path. He has found a producer who is willing to work with her and get her music out to the right people. He wants to make Mavis a star. And it doesn't hurt that Mavis knows Eve, and that Eve is married to Roarke. And Roarke knows the exact people needed to push Mavis to the top of the music industry.

I enjoyed this book, it was a bit slower paced than some of the others, but it kept my attention. Kept me reading late into the night to see just what was going to happen next. It was very well written and the characters are so well developed. Eve and Roarke both had terrible childhoods. But they seem to need each other to heal. And as you read you can see that happening for both of them.
I can't wait to read the next one.

4.0 out of 5 stars A very different kind of rapture in death

Rapture in Death is #4 in J D Robb's unusual crime thriller series. I am slowly coming to terms with the bizarre setting towards the end of the 21st Century when space travel is common, robots do most menial jobs, guns are banned and virtual reality systems are programmed to meet an individual's needs for activity or relaxation.

At the end of an action-packed IMMORTAL IN DEATH Lieutenant Eve Dallas beats up a murderer. That just happened to be on her wedding day to mega-rich super-stud, and slightly shady Roarke. Despite this the wedding between the most unusual couple goes off as planned and eventually they get away on their honeymoon, travelling to and enjoying exotic and romantic places, including to a 5 star tourist resort being built on one of Roarke's new satellites.

While they are on the satellite a brilliant engineer, with no apparent personal problems, commits suicide. Back home Dallas cannot prevent a suicide of a famous lawyer who is not known for suicidal tendencies and is not taking illegal drugs. While investigating this case Dallas believes that another suicide by a prominent politician may also be connected when she finds that all victims have a microscopic burn in the same part of the brain. How could this happen? Could it be drug related or because they all used on of Roarke's advanced virtual reality systems for their relaxation. The problem is that hundreds of other people use the same systems each day without harm.

While Eve is never scared to face up to dangerous criminals she panics at being involved in space travel until Roarke unlocks the thrills of the equivalent of the mile high club - in his private space transport. The series would not be complete without more sexual fireworks between the most unlikely couple - this time the fireworks are super spectacular and may have been manipulated.

To balance off these fireworks there is also lots of great, and sometimes tough police work as Eve happily resumes work in earnest. This time she is helped by the very efficient Officer Delia Peabody who is stunned when Eve assigns her to be her permanent aide.

This was an entertaining interlude with another episode of a very different kind of crime thriller series - which really shouldn't be taken seriously. 3.5 stars.
