A father, Jake and daughter, Piper have had a rough couple of years; father was fired from posh Football Coaching Gig, wife/mother (Susan) died in car accident, moved away from their home after the death, father in law tries to take custody of Piper, finding way out of a bottle proves hard for Jake and Piper finds trying to be a teen girl without her moms guidance is lousy. These are just a few of their issues, but they give a would-be reader an idea of homelife and the mentality of main characters.

When Jake stops to pick up his daughter from her maternal aunt's house, all hell breaks lose. The aunt is dead, the killer is dragging daughter away for kidnapping, cops begin to like Jake as prime suspects and won't listen when he tries to tell them his daughter was kidnapped Meanwhile, being detained in police cruiser, Jake gets a call from his daughter where he overhears bad guys talking. He gets some info to go on, fakes being sick to evade police and now he's on a mission to find and save daughter. To hell with anyone who gets in his way or tries to get him to back down.

On the other side of town, FBI Special Agent Danny, Jake's former high school sweetheart (who is still holding a torch) is now the agent assigned to oversee the Aunt's murder investigation. The aunt was a newly hired FBI analyst, so it is important to cover bases just in case. When Danny finds out that her ex beau, Jake, is prime suspect, she is immediately reluctant to believe it. She starts tracking Jake, searching for alternate theories and motives to save Jake, as well as analyzing what went wrong 15 Yeats ago when they broke up.

Once Danny gets Intel that a professional hired hitman has just landed in Austin, she immediately knows all is not what it seems. In the meanwhile, Jake is following every lead he can find to get to Piper. The hired gun is doing everything he can to find Jake and leaving a stack of bodies in his wake at that. All the while the media continues blaming the deaths on Jake.

It's definitely a three ring circus, but it's got a fast roller coaster made especially for this read, so it's super fun. Definitely hold onto your hats and get ready for a bumpy but exciting ride. I enjoyed this book more than I thought I would, and after reading it in its entirety, I would definitely recommend it.

No spoilers. 3 stars. In ALL HE HAS LEFT, Jake Slater has found himself in a world of hurt since marrying into the wealthy Kingston family...

... His wife Sarah mysteriously died in a car accident for which his in-laws blame him...

... One of the Kingston nieces has been murdered, and his 11 year old daughter Piper has been kidnapped...

And what's worse is...

Someone has hired a hit man to kill Jake and Jake doesn't even know who would want him dead...

Immediately...

The police suspect that Jake is behind all the murder and mayhem of late, and have put the FBI onto his trail...

But...

Jake had made a vow to his daughter that he would always be there for her and would never leave her...

This story wasn't as bad as it was preposterous. To avoid spoilers, I'll just say
that a lot of serendipity was employed in this story to facilitate progress in the plot as well as the endgame solution.

This was my Amazon First Reads selection for the month of March, 2023.

4.0 out of 5 stars Mr. Zunker is back!

I found this author a few books ago and really enjoyed his books. Then, I had my first bad experience with one of his latest books and I was a little worried about trying this one. I needn't have worried. I thought this book went back to what made the Sam Callahan and David Adams series' so good.

The plot takes off from the very beginning and doesn't let up until the very end of the book. The book introduces us to Jake Slater. His wife is killed in a hit and run accident leaving Jake alone with his daughter Piper. His in-laws have never liked Jake and they are unfortunately very wealthy and are doing everything in their power to try to get custody of Jake's daughter Piper.

Without going into spoilers, let's just say that things go off the rails for Jake and he finds himself on the run, trying to find his kidnapped daughter. This book was full of action, drama, suspense and then ultimately, betrayal.

There is a twist at the end that you may or may not figure out ahead of time but I enjoyed the back and forth and the way information was doled out sporadically and in snippets. It helped to build to the ultimate climax of the story.

I did enjoy this book. I listened to most of this on audio and thought the narrator, Christopher Ryan Grant, did a fine job.

4.0 out of 5 stars More of a 3.5 kind of read but it's rare to find a good dad in literature so I'll round up.

This was an intelligent, fast-paced story where a loving father is forced to do the impossible.. he must find his little girl before he's captured or killed.. but will it be in time?

The story picks up pretty early on and keeps the pace throughout, further increased by short chapters and multiple POVs, so it's a pretty quick read. There are times when it's repetitive but not enough to become obnoxious.
It did feel rushed.
I would have liked more time getting to know the characters and their backstories but there really wasn't enough time with how short the book is. It does work for what it isโ€”stillโ€”another 100-150 pages or so could have done it wonders.
The knowledge that a little girl's life is on the line creates a tension that will have you on the edge of your seat, as the ever-present mystery of "Why?" holds you hostage there.

Overall, it was a good book, the author did a fantastic job with what's here and I look forward to reading more from him in the future.. but I do think I'll pick something longer next time.

Ahhhhh I donโ€™t normally read suspense books. More of romance girl, but it was recommended for a book club.

I found the ending to be quite predictable but it did not take away from the plot. It is a very fast past high action book. Very short, but itโ€™s over the course of like 2 days so I guess thatโ€™s expected. Even with how short the novel was, I found it did not miss anything. It did not feel as though it was too smoothly wrapped up. It happened exactly like I would imagine it would if this was turned into a movie.

Jake's football coaching season was terrible, all he wanted to to is go home and be with his family. Although his relationship with his wife was somewhat strained, they always bounce back. But her insisting him stop by her folks luxurious home led to a domino of terrible events.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good quick read

First Chad Zunker book Iโ€™ve read. This was a March freebie available to Prime members. Read the synopsis and thought it sounded interesting enough to give it a shot. Was glad I did.

This is a short book, around 200 pages in length. Donโ€™t like to give away any spoilers. In brief, the main protagonist, Jake Slater, is a high school football coach who married into money. He goes through a devastating chain of events; his wife dies in a car crash, he relocates to start fresh in Austin TX, only to have his only daughter kidnapped, and another family member murdered. Jake is pinpointed by the police and FBI as a person of interest, and finds himself pursued, not only by the authorities, but the media and (surprise) a hired assassin. Itโ€™s a race against time as he covertly hunts for his daughter and attempts to stay alive and clear his name.

Because of the short length of the book, it quickly garners your interest and becomes a rapid page turner. There is no shortage of action, twists and turns and suspense in this thriller. A tad predictable but an entertaining thrill ride nonetheless. Well written and well edited, itโ€™s presented in good taste. Minimal language and not overtly graphic with violence. I highly recommend this one and will seek out more by author Zunker. Not a masterpiece, just a quick enjoyable read. A strong four star effort.

It's a decent book. Light suspense, easy to read. Nothing technical to have to muddle through in some books. Not a lot if character build up.

I am not sure how this book feel into my lap but it was a great weekend read.

Jake's wife dies in a hit and run accident and he is left to raise his daughter Piper on his own. His in laws want sole custody and Piper and will go to any length to get her.

This is a good story about how far a father will go to save his daughter from harm.

A quote I liked from the book," Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely."

I enjoyed this book very much. Mr. Zunker writes in a nice, flowing style with a simple, understandable wording that captures his descriptions of both characters and setting. To me, this helps the reader stay more involved in the story line and mood of what is happening. All in all, I like his writing style very much!
