A father, Jake and daughter, Piper have had a rough couple of years; father was fired from posh Football Coaching Gig, wife/mother (Susan) died in car accident, moved away from their home after the death, father in law tries to take custody of Piper, finding way out of a bottle proves hard for Jake and Piper finds trying to be a teen girl without her moms guidance is lousy. These are just a few of their issues, but they give a would-be reader an idea of homelife and the mentality of main characters.
When Jake stops to pick up his daughter from her maternal aunt's house, all hell breaks lose. The aunt is dead, the killer is dragging daughter away for kidnapping, cops begin to like Jake as prime suspects and won't listen when he tries to tell them his daughter was kidnapped Meanwhile, being detained in police cruiser, Jake gets a call from his daughter where he overhears bad guys talking. He gets some info to go on, fakes being sick to evade police and now he's on a mission to find and save daughter. To hell with anyone who gets in his way or tries to get him to back down.
On the other side of town, FBI Special Agent Danny, Jake's former high school sweetheart (who is still holding a torch) is now the agent assigned to oversee the Aunt's murder investigation. The aunt was a newly hired FBI analyst, so it is important to cover bases just in case. When Danny finds out that her ex beau, Jake, is prime suspect, she is immediately reluctant to believe it. She starts tracking Jake, searching for alternate theories and motives to save Jake, as well as analyzing what went wrong 15 Yeats ago when they broke up.
Once Danny gets Intel that a professional hired hitman has just landed in Austin, she immediately knows all is not what it seems. In the meanwhile, Jake is following every lead he can find to get to Piper. The hired gun is doing everything he can to find Jake and leaving a stack of bodies in his wake at that. All the while the media continues blaming the deaths on Jake.
It's definitely a three ring circus, but it's got a fast roller coaster made especially for this read, so it's super fun. Definitely hold onto your hats and get ready for a bumpy but exciting ride. I enjoyed this book more than I thought I would, and after reading it in its entirety, I would definitely recommend it.
