Catherine McKenzie is at the top of the thriller game
June 12, 2019
I read a lot of thrillers, in particular domestic thrillers, and I've found many are unreadable to mediocre. The great thing about Catherine McKenzie is she never disappoints. This time around she gives us a modern retelling of the classic read-of-the-will set-up. A closed circle mystery set at a family-owned summer camp. McKenzie has achieved something difficult, taking on the challenge of misleading savvy readers to the point where we think we're ahead of the author, when in fact we're not. It worked. There were a couple of times I thought I'd figured out whodunit, and was disappointed that McKenzie had hidden her clues so thinly. But she had the last laugh. And that's why I love a good mystery. It's a thrill to 'play the great old game' and lose to a clever and talented author. I will continue to pre-order McKenzie's books and read them as soon as they're released, which is never fast enough for my tastes.
