A Wannabe Troma-Movie Given a Budget and Flat/Dull Script—but Terrible

You may have seen the other reviews that tell you to NOT watch this movie.
They are correct.
Don't be cocky and think the "not worth your time" reviews are a hoax, that you LOVE terrible movies and that this will just be added to the list—don't be like me.
Don't think your love of B-Movie classics and Cronenburg-esque body horror will translate here. It is too high budget for that. The comedy lands flat. The body horror isn't even laughable or cringeworthy. The main character is so extremely unlikeable that you are pleased by his fate. He is only ever shown as a one-sided, totally flat, pretentious megalomaniac with a false sense of power/scope who belittles everyone in his life. 100% sure everyone who "cares" about him in this movie is better off without him. By the time Johnny Depp comes in with, possibly, the worst bit he's ever been delegated to, your mouth will already be agape in "WTF"? But, again, not even in a good way.
The plot holds promise, but could have been executed much more successfully with less budget, some actual creativity and willingness to get truly gruesome and weird (which it never quite manages), and better (or worse!) writing.
They should have given this script to Troma, they at least know how to handle these concepts.
Do yourself a favor—treat yourself to watching "In the Heart of the Sea" and then pick your favorite Cronenberg for some body horror, picture them together, and call it a night. This is not worth your time.

Needs and deserves more than one viewing

Like most people, I hated this film the first time. But then I watched the special features, including the original Smodcast #259, in which Kevin Smith and Scott Mosier improvised the complete storyline ("spoiled" from Day One). I let a day or two go by, then I watched it a second time. MUCH better. Then, I listened to the commentary track. Even better.
Now, I love it for what it is, and what it ISN'T. Your traditional movie expectations will probably not be met. It's a horror movie with some laughs in it, not a comedy with scary parts. A common element of horror films is that you don't really like any of the characters, and no one is redeemed in the end. It's just a big, delicious "Whoa, that's messed up" kind of story. Granted, a movie that doesn't need an explanation, and works the first time, is better than Tusk (thus four stars, instead of five). But this film is worth getting into, however unnerving the experience.
There's actually a lot RIGHT in this movie. Michael Parks and Johnny Depp deliver delightful monologues and conversation, chewing the scenery in an engaging, lively way. Justin Long carries his dislikeable-protatgonist role very well, and is suitably traumatized by his fate. Parks has quite a few surprises in him as well. Although the visual and audio qualities are top rate, this is still recognizably a Kevin Smith film. His best work involves two or maybe three people talking in a simple shot, exchanging witty and verbose paragraphs, with a generous helping of "salty" language. The walrus suit design is horrifying yet compelling, the sets are beautiful, and the cinematography is perfect.
Whenever Smith tries to be something he's not, he fails as an artist. This is the movie he made for himself to enjoy, and once you know that, you can appreciate it on his level. It should be no surprise that, though it bombed at the box office, this film has turned a profit in home-video sales, and continues to do so. Such has been the case since his second film, Mallrats. People will be talking about this film, for better or worse, for years to come.
As a statement of artistic event, Tusk is actually very inspiring. If Kevin Smith, who has never really had a box-office smash (has he?) ... if he could get this movie made, of this quality, with these actors, and those designers, on such a small budget ... then there's no reason you shouldn't pursue your dreams.
Watch it, hate it, complain about it, look behind the scenes, then watch it again. You may be surprised how good it can be.

Different - Really Different!

I watched this movie because I am a big Justin Long fan. I didn't think I'd like it based on the title and the cover graphic. I ended up loving it. J Long plays a podcaster who is a bastard. His podcast partner is the grown up who played the kid in "The Sixth Sense", whom it was good to see. Long travels to a lonely place in Canada chasing what sounds like a great story to use on their podcast and never comes back. He was led to the house of Michael Parks (great to see him, too), who turns out to be a nut case. He lured people to his home only for the purpose of transforming them into a creature he once had as a friend, until each died, then he'd seek another person. The special effects of his creation is horrific, in a good way if you like horror movies. Now I watched this movie not knowing it was supposed to be a comedy. So I was taking this all as a serious horror movie, which made me feel dumb afterward, but I'll tell you I think I enjoyed the movie a lot more than had I known it was a comedy. I saw this free on Amazon Prime. I would buy this DVD if it had the extra on it that shows how the special effects were done.

I really don’t know how anyone could give this less than five stars. I started watching it on a Friday night and was so immediately astounded by the dialogue and the overall feel of the movie that I didn’t want to watch it while tired and so I finished it Saturday night. I wanted to absorb and savor every weird moment of it. I didn't know any of the actors or the director, but I immediately identified this is something special. What came to my mind was the Texas Chainsaw Massacre, and the Troma movies came to mind as well. The level of horror here is astounding, but there obviously is a humorous level, and the whole escapade really is uniquely preposterous. This film is an extremely creative enterprise. Someone here compared this to a Quentin Tarantino production, and I can see that as well. I was so pleased to see that this was available as a DVD, I bought it immediately because I know it will sell out as people discover this beautiful oddity. This is one have to have for my horror film collection. I suspect this film will become much more famous as the years go on and people discover it because it is truly a cult masterpiece.

This film seems to have an interesting premise, but somehow never really made use of it. If felt like they were trying to make a film to simply be weird, without caring if they made it any good. It felt like an inferior version of the 1973 Dirk Benedict movie Sssssss. (Also known as Ssssnake.)

There was no heart to this movie. The victim wasn't likeable enough to gain any sympathy from viewers, and the villain wasn't charismatic enough to keep your interest in what he was doing. And the weird premise just not weird enough or interesting enough to keep viewers' attention. Made a slight attempt at pathos at the end, which may have worked if you'd been in any way invested in the characters previously.

Features an almost unrecognisable Johnny Depp, but he was wasted. His character was just sort of there, without adding much other than hurrying the plot along a bit.
