I was looking forward to watching this movie for a long time and it did not disappoint me AT ALL!! It was an in-depth look at women's honor and respect. Acting, directing, and dialogue were impeccable. A mind blowing plot that deserves a standing ovation!
Excellent in exposing what is true across cultures/societies/ethnicity that women are generally expected to be tolerant of the fragile egos of men, and consider their own passions, ambitions, and life goals to be less important to the success of any relationship with men (marriage, lovers, employment, etc,) This is not another feminist rebellion movie that waves a bra and says no to wanting relationships with men, It actually shows how much men and women can coexist peacefully in all types of relationships including father/daughter when selfishness is replaced with respect and compassion (two great character descriptions that usually are not found in human nature; they have to be learned and developed while selfishness does not - it comes naturally).
Lead guy hits his wife a thappad Lead guy’s Father is stays separate from his wife (ego issues and he is bad) Lead guy's Brother pokes himself into his brother's domestic issues and counsel the lawyers to win his brother's case by cheating and lying. Lead guy's male attorney gives extreme suggestion to make matters worse. Lead guy's brother in law (Wife's brother) indirectly supports him, had to fight with his girlfriend, who supports his sister. Lead guy's father in law supports his daughter, but he didn't encourage his wife's wishes to become a singer( he's bad) Maid who works for this couple is constantly beaten by her husband. Wife's Attorney's husband is abuses her, bruises her ego by taking credit to her achievements. Main guy's friend, supports the main guy, so he is bad.
Neighbor's dead husband, is a great person according to neighbor, but we never get to see him. She is unable to find a Man to replace him. In the heat of the moment, guy hit's his wife in a party, he should have apologized at the party end of story. This thappad made her realize that he does not love her and vice versa. This guy later makes many attempts to take her, everything fails and he shows his negative shades. He promises to become better person, but it is not good enough. He has to be perfect.
They show women live happily after separating from their husbands. I want to see how she is raising a child and living happily(as she wanted) being a single mother. Remember it takes a village to raise a child.
I loved the movie; I would recommend to watch. The movie depicts the underlying issues, how women are taken for granted, how they are expected to just accept disrespect & move on, how society plays a role in setting different standards for men and women. Overall, I appreciate the effort made to show the emotions a woman goes through in the whole ordeal.
I do not like to watch social messaging movies as they contain too much overacting and cliches which make me sick to stomach sometimes but this movie is something else, not a single moment you feel cliche hanging out, every character played in this movie made believable even husband, friends, etc
The movie flows beautifully throughout the various emotions and events. Amrita, played amazingly well by Taapsee P, realized that she forgot to live and be happy after Vikram hits her and takes it casually. It was her wake up call and then she understands that she might be living a lie for a long time. Amrita represents all the anger unleashed in a dignified manner, over generations of women, who have learnt wrong lessons. In the process, the men of the society have accepted and learnt all wrong lessons as well. It is time to truly learn the meaning of marriage - a beautiful relationship based on love, mutual respect and understanding. It is not based on stereotypes which devoid women of their basic human right - happiness. I loved the subtle depiction of emotions as well as the music, unlike the loud and overly colorful hindi masala movies. Kudos to the entire cast and movie team, job extremely well done..Thank you..
As a person from outside this culture, but aware of many aspects of it, I found the writing, acting and direction to be not only entertaining but thought provoking. Each of the characters is complete and respected. That in itself is a remarkable achievement. The details in set decoration are excellent and add richness to the lives of the characters. Lovely work, all around.
