In the few weeks since Evan Smoak retired, he’s found that adjusting to normal life is more of a struggle than he anticipated, especially since he has nothing to fill his time. The phone calls from Veronica, the woman claiming to be his mother, aren’t helping. He finally decides to meet her, and she asks for his help protecting Andrew Duran from the people trying to kill him. Evan begins tracking down Andrew just to see what his situation is. Will he help Andrew? What might having Veronica in his life mean for him?

If you are new to these books, I don’t recommend you start here. Yes, the background you need is given as events unfold, but to fully appreciate the growth in Evan and his relationships with others, you need the full background the earlier books give you. As a fan, I loved those growth moments in this book. Unfortunately, they did come at the expense of the pacing. Normally, author Gregg Hurwitz is a master at keeping the thrills going while developing the characters for us. Don’t get me wrong, there are some great action scenes, and the book always held my interest. It’s just not quite on par with his others. The scenes spent giving us technical information didn’t help with the pacing. Having said that, it’s going to be a long wait until the next book comes out so I can find out what happens next. Being a thriller, this does have more language and violence than my normal selections, so be prepared before you pick it up. Fans will definitely enjoy this book, and if you haven’t started the series yet, I recommend you do so today.

Prodigal Son is the sixth book in the deservedly bestselling Orphan X series about a former assassin on a mission to redeem himself by helping out people in life-threatening trouble. These are action-packed thrillers with an ever-enlarging cast of entertaining support characters, and it would definitely help to have read the earlier books but it’s not essential to follow the plot.

Evan Smoak thought he had retired The Nowhere Man, on the orders of the US President, but when he gets a call from someone claiming to be his mother, asking him to help a friend’s son, he can’t resist looking into it. Andre just happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time, but now he has a pair of relentless contract killers on his tail, hired to cover up a shocking new weapon. This time Evan is vulnerable from his long lost mother’s revelations, and the new longing for family connection denied him as an Orphan - so he is going to need help from all his friends to complete his mission.

I’ve thoroughly enjoyed all of the books in this series, but for some reason this one didn’t grab me in quite the same way and it has taken me nearly a week to finish, which is very unusual for me. It was partly all the technology and gadgets, but also I wasn’t completely convinced by Evan’s rapid acceptance of Veronica’s confessions and willingness to help her. I did like the flashbacks to his time in the foster home, and his current interactions with surrogate-daughter Joey - and Dog, of course! The villains are suitably evil, and there are also plenty of common-or-garden Crap Men who get schooled on how to treat women appropriately by our hero. It’s still a very good read, it just suffers by comparison with its predecessors, so I’m rounding up for 3.5. NB this does end on a fairly major cliffhanger, which I’m not a fan of especially as the next book, Dark Horse, is not out until February.

I have greatly enjoyed the Orphan X series until Prodigal Son. A good editor was needed to shorten and tighten up this uncharacteristically long and meandering Orphan X novel. The plot and the characters are as good as any previous Orphan X novel but there was too much yadayadayada, unnecessary conversations, unnecessary side tracks, etc. I still would recommend it for Orphan X fans, but be patient as it is necessary to plod through parts. Hopefully the author will return to his good tight writing in the future.

I love the Orphan X series. The books are well written and innovative. This book delves deeper into Evan as a person, not just a tool used in “bad” ways for good. The insertion of characters from the past added very interesting twists to the life of Orphan X, but some things felt a little stretched as if the author hammered at making these parts fit. The one thing that really bothered me was the ending because it is identical to an ending in a previous book and no explanation was ever given about how this was repaired. I hope that in the next book the author begins the book with reconstruction of the extensive damage done and new security measures added. All in all, it’s a good book with a plot that is not predictable, making the book so much more interesting. I only gave it four stars because I have come to expect perfection from Greg Hurwitz, so maybe I’m not being fair. He’s a great writer and he has ne hooked on Orphan X. I will continue to buy every book he puts out.

The character development is 1st class and as a reader I find myself really caring about them - the latest in the series is another huge leap forward emotionally, but still retains all the action you could need - I can’t recommend this enough. The first half of this book was on track, looking like was going to measure up the high standards of the previous ones in the series but then went off the rails on several counts:

1) Totally implausible technology: OK I'm cursed with a decent understanding of AI and programming which is what spoilt this book for me: the technology portrayed in this story is probably 30-40 years away at least which made the whole thing a bit jarring - I couldn't reconcile these sci-fi elements with the rest of the setting.

2) Plot anomalies like an academic with no military training managing to disarm Even.

3) Unsatisfying brief face offs between Even and the main badies.

Please, concentrate on the human aspects of the story and lets have less of the bond-on-steroids technology.

I tend not to bother with thrillers these days, as the only person who impressed me in decades was Lee Child. However, there is no way I would miss one of Mr Hurwitz's Orphan X thrillers. Whereas I would enjoy the adventures of, but would not want to be, say, James Bond or Jack Reacher, I'd actually like to be this hero, Evan Smoak - instead of just a vehicle for violence, and a superbly competent one, he is a character of depth and integrity. But even if you don't care about that, these are as exciting as hell, with tremendously impressive technical details as well as great stories and great writing. Don't miss them if you love thrillers.

Orphan X is supposed to be enjoying his retirement. Yep; me neither. Although a figure from Evan’s past piques his curiosity, this facet itself is not the mainstay of the story. As we’ve come to expect from this series, the action is relentless and graced with Evan’s sardonic wit.

Compared to the last two books, the story isn’t as rigid but the writing is as good as ever. This put a smile on my face and the ending has you checking to see when Orphan X will be back in action.
