This was Tim Burton’s version of Planet of the Apes. He has a very distinct style so it was interesting to see what he did with the story. It turned out to be a real disappointment.
Burton decided to take elements from the original but mostly add new ones to make it his own. The start with Captain Davidson (Mark Wahlberg) as an astronaut was an addition. Him landing on a planet and being captured by apes was from the original film. One of the biggest changes was in the first film the humans couldn’t talk, but here they can. That changed a major element as Charlton Heston in the original was special because he had the ability to speak. This was one of many major mistakes in the script.
Even more important than dropping one of the main sources of tension in the story was they made Davidson completely selfish. He’s captured by the apes and all he cares about is finding his way back to his spaceship. He escapes with a group of humans and apes and doesn’t care about them at all. He just wants to get off the planet and he wasn’t going to take them with them. With that kind of main character why would anyone care about him? There are also some huge gaps in the writing that really stand out.
