I was thrilled last year when Amazon brought my favorite podcast "Lore" to television. The first season of Lore was fantastic! I loved it! My only gripe with Season1 was it wasn't long enough (I wanted more episodes). What made Season 1 of Lore so great was the haunting narration of Lore's creator AaronMahnke, the beautifully disturbing animation, and the spot on re-enactments. Season 1 captured the true essence of Lore's magic, great storytelling. Season 2 of Lore is such a disappointment. Amazon missed the bullseye by eliminating Mr. Mahnke's spooky voiceover and the mesmerizing visual arts. Season 2 of Lore failed to transported me to a believable time and place in history. I was instead given vignettes of Masterpiece Theater type stories with splashes of gore. The theatrical stories did not make me want to peruse Kindle for books on history and folklore, but instead, made me want to switch to a different streaming channel. I also felt too much creative license was used to make the historical tales more entertaining...rock music in a story about 1867 Irish Grave Robbers in Scotland...Really! I know Mr. Mahnke's Twitter feed said he worked with the writers in creating Season 2 and Amazon wanted to take Lore in a more theatrical direction which is very unfortunate. Amazon if you're reading or listening "Let me be clear there is no LORE without Mr. Mahnke's memorable storytelling"! Please, please right this wrong in Season 3 and go back to basics with Mr. Mahnke, animation and acting...PLEASE!
Season 2 is lacking in narration from AaronMahnke. In Season 1, the narration would not only provide an introduction, but also reveal deeper history or cultural tie-ins to provide greater context. Season 2 seems far more focused on telling each episode as a self-contained story with the history and research taking a distant backseat.
From the reviews, Season 2 breaks down like this:
If you've never heard of the Lore podcast, didn't watch Season 1, or you're wholly unfamiliar with these stories, you will love Season 2 of Lore. Even lacking the narration and history, these stories are still fascinating and retelling them for modern audiences has definite value.
But if you're a fan of AaronMahnke's narration and research from Season 1 or you're just a fan of the Lore podcast format, Season 2 will be incredibly lacking. Its not to say its bad show, but a poor reformatting of something that stood out as truly unique in the "history of the weird" genre.
Hopefully Season 3 will strike a balance with fans of both Seasons 1 & 2.
I'm not feeling the new format of season 2. I, like most people who liked season one, was excited there was a second season. I Couldn't even pay attention to this season. I skipped on to episode two, still nothing good. I only hope there will be a 3rd season and they go back to the original with AaronMahnke. I know the stories, I'm just interested in a nice visual and to hear them told with the amazing narration of season 1. I found if you search YouTube for Burke and Hare animated Simple History has a good video and narrative and Adele K Thomas did a great rendition of the Bathory story. Just search each name and look for animation and skip season 2.
I know that the narrator was a huge point of contention in season 1, but we LISTEN to the stories for context and ques! Watching a LORE history lesson WITHOUT AaronMahnke’s narration is like replacing every character in Gone with the Wind with Ewoks! Awesome...but tragic! I miss Aaron’s /lore’s composer! The stories were unrecognizable beyond the initial title.
I love everything Lore. The first season kept the Lore roots, AaronMahnke narrated it and it was awesome it stayed true to the Podcast. This new season is absolute GARBAGE, you don't know which episode goes with the Podcast story. I also feel its to over the top. But that's what you get when you have people from the Walking Dead Working on the show. I feel this is more of a horror series instead of a Folklore series, Hollywood ruins everything and they ruined a great show. Very disappointing.
Im an avid listener of the Lore podcast but got my start into the world of Lore through the original season of Lore on Amazon. I started with episode 1 going, "This AaronMahnke guy's narration is strange to me." but by the end I was more than intrigued. I looked up the podcast and got hooked. I've watched all the season 1 episodes (multiple times) and listened to all the podcasts and let me tell you season 1 nailed the style of Lore perfectly. It felt like the podcast came alive with great imagery and storytelling, hefty amounts of information, and AaronMahnke's buttery voiceover. Season 2 however fails in comparison with literally no voiceover from AaronMahnke. I mean seriously? None at all? I kept waiting for that magical moment when I'd hear AaronMahnke welcome me to Lore and it never came! I will admit I did like the theatrical look and feel of the episodes but I felt that the stories were blatantly tampered with to make them more dramatic than true. If you are a fan of Lore like I am you might be very disappointed with this new seaaon. If you have never seen Lore before you probably won't care. As for me, however, I just hope season 3 returns to the Lore I came to know and love.
No narration, stores we've all heard by watching other television shows. Didn't we see the entire Elizabeth Bathory episode on deadly women? Terrible let down. Just drama, with season 1 we had AaronMahnke telling us what the story was going to be about. With season 2 you have to guess you have no idea where the story is headed, this might work for AHS but it's all wrong for Lore. It's all about the curse of this or legend of that. Amazon should be ashamed to call this one of their original series. Terrible disappointment and let down.
I for one love the new season. I don’t miss AaronMahnke’s narration at all. I find his awkward. Pauses. Between. Every. Single. Word. Annoying. The new episodes are beautifully filmed and the acting is top notch. The Hinterkaifeck episode is especially haunting. I only wish it had more episodes. I burned through the entire season in one evening.
Season 1 of Lore was my favorite Amazon series of all time, and I was super excited for season two! But this new season lacks in the originality and flair of the first season, AND the original podcast, by excluding the narration of AaronMahnke. His talent of story telling is what makes each episode so chillingly entertaining. Season 2 is nothing more than poor melodramatic acting that you'd find on a PBS miniseries.
Please produce a better season 3. The show has so much potential! Just stay true to the podcast.
1st season was awesome I binged watched the whole thing in 1 weekend. this one is so disappointing, I forced my self to finish the 1st episode hoping it would improve as it went along, it didnt!!! WTH happened? where's the Lore we get from the podcast and the 1st season? it was such a great and UNIQUE show, now it's just another bloody show. the music on the 1st episode was terrible, 2nd episode was okay as they had the cartoonish story telling, but was not narrated by AaronMahnke, I love the podcasts so I'll just stick to those.
