Kevin Thornton is a seven time Arthur Ellis Award Nominee. He is a former director of the local Heritage Society and Library, and he has been a soldier in Africa, a contractor for the Canadian Military in Afghanistan, a newspaper and magazine columnist, a Director of both the Crime Writers of Canada and the Writers' Guild of Alberta, a founding member of Northword Literary Magazine, and is either a current or former member of the Mystery Writers of America, the Crime Writers Association, The Calgary Crime Writers, the International Thriller Writers, the International Association of Crime Writers, the Keys - a Catholic Writers group founded by Monsignor Knox and G.K. Chesterton - as well as, somewhat inexplicably, the Mesdames of Mayhem and Sisters in Crime. If you ask, he will join.

Born in Kenya, Kevin has lived or worked in South Africa, Dubai,England, Afghanistan, New Zealand, Ontario and now Northern Alberta. He lives on his wits and his wit, and is doing better than expected.

So wrote Dr. Watson in “The Problem of Thor Bridge” – and ever since, Sherlockians have been bringing us new adventures from this legendary tin dispatch box. While Watson’s original First Literary Agent only edited the pitifully few sixty stories that make up the original Canon, there have since been literally thousands of traditional adventures about the true Sherlock Holmes – and there will never be enough!
In 2015, The MX Book of New Sherlock Holmes Stories burst upon the scene, featuring adventures set within the correct time period, and written by many of today’s leading Sherlockian authors from around the world. Those first three volumes were overwhelmingly received, and there were soon calls for additional collections. Since then, their popularity has only continued to grow.
In Fall 2016, the series presented its first “themed” collection – Part V: Christmas Adventures – containing 30 new adventures that proved to be extremely and enduringly popular. With that in mind, we now revisit that season, with 57 more Christmas Adventures, ranging from a consequential case that occurred when Holmes was still a teenager, to another in the late 1920’s when Holmes – in retirement – was still at the top of his game.
The fifty-seven stories in these three companion volumes are a thrilling mix of mysteries, whatever the season. In 2015, the first three volumes of The MX Book of New Sherlock Holmes Stories arrived, containing over 60 stories in the true traditional Canonical manner, revisiting Holmes and Watson in those days where it is “always 1895” ... or a few decades on either side of that. On August 4th, 1914, England declared war against Germany, after the latter’s invasion of Belgium earlier that day. Just days before that, Germany had declared war on Russia and France and Luxembourg. Soon much of the world was dragged in. Europe was a tinderbox, and the fuse was lit. To anyone living in those times, it must have seemed that the world had suddenly gone mad. But in fact, the events leading to The Great War and the deaths of millions had been in the making for decades, as the European nations scrambled to outdo one another around the world in terms of escalating military might and colonial expansion, while strangling themselves with convoluted treaties and intermarried royal families.

Although just a dozen other Canonical Holmes adventures would be published after “His Last Bow”, that story, covering just a few minutes on the evening of August 2nd, 1914 — "the most terrible August in the history of the world” — was chronologically the last Canonical adventure. But even though that narrative — included in this collection — relates what Holmes and Watson were doing at the very beginning of the War, there is much more to tell….
