4.0 out of 5 starsHIT AND RUN: Moreno & Hart Mysteries Book #2

HIT AND RUN is the second book in the Moreno and Hart series, and contains two separate novellas by the wonderful duo of Allison Brennan and Laura Griffin. The stories revolve around two women (Scarlet Moreno and Krista Hart) both of whom survived an ambush while working for the LAPD. Now three years later they are best friends who have started their own private investigation firm.
Please Note: Because of connecting events and background information however, this is one of those books that should really not be read out of order. So be sure to pick up "CRASH AND BURN" first, otherwise you'll probably be left feeling like you're missing some pieces of the puzzle.
HIT by Allison Brennan - 4 Stars
When a street cop and old childhood friend of Scarlet's is accused of killing his girlfriend who also happened to be his partner on the force, Scarlet steps in to try and discover who set him up. But as she digs deeper into the case she finds a link between this framing and the ambush that nearly killed her and Krista on that fateful day three years ago.
I liked this novella by Ms. Brennan a little better than her first in the series. It takes place approximately three weeks after "Crash and Burn" and was action packed and overall just an entertaining mystery from start to finish. And while I didn't originally fall in love with Scarlet, she did grow on me a bit more in this story. She shows a little more emotion here and I also found the relationship between her and Alex (her sort-of boyfriend) more believable too. In the end it was a solid addition to the series and I can't wait for the day Scarlet discovers who set her up to die three years earlier.
RUN by Laura Griffin - 4.5 Stars
Against her better judgment, Krista allows herself to be pulled into another case with rival investigator R.J. Flynn. This one involves a slimeball lawyer accused of murdering his beautiful, soon to be ex-wife. It doesn't take long for Krista to realize that something is off though. Unfortunately, Krista's digging has put her in the crosshairs of a vicious killer.
Once again Ms. Griffin's novella happened to be my favorite of the two. I just find Krista not only more likable than Scarlet's character, but also infinitely more lovable. She and R.J. (her love interest) are not only both very charismatic, but their chemistry is absolutely amazing too. As for the mystery itself there were plenty of twists, the killer was a complete shocker, and the conclusion is not at all what I expected. I'm not only looking forward to seeing what case Krista and R.J. are onto next, but I cannot wait to see what life has in store for these two on a much more personal level also.
