An unsolved crime pits a desperate woman against a relentless killer in New York Times bestselling author Mary Burton’s heart-stopping novel of psychological suspense…
Fourteen years ago, Kaitlin Roe was the lone witness to the abduction of her cousin Gina. She still remembers that lonely Virginia road. She can still see the masked stranger and hear Gina’s screams. And she still suffers the guilt of running away in fear and resents being interrogated as a suspect in the immediate aftermath. Now Kaitlin has only one way to assuage the pain and nightmares—by interviewing everyone associated with the unsolved crime for a podcast that could finally bring closure to a case gone cold.
But when a woman Kaitlin questions is later found stabbed to death, she fears that she’s drawn a killer out of hiding. It’s Detective John Adler’s fear that the murders have only just begun. Now his job is to keep Kaitlin safe.
As a bond between Kaitlin and Adler builds, the past closes in just as fast—and it’s darker than Kaitlin remembers. Soon, her wish will come true. She’s going to find out exactly what happened to Gina. Someone has been dying to tell her.

Editorial Reviews
Review
“Burton’s latest romantic thriller takes inspiration from the true crime podcast sensation, weaving a story about a cold case that still holds deadly surprises. The narrative, which shifts from collected interviews regarding a fourteen-year-old murder and the current day murder spree it inspires, moves quickly and provides the reader with plenty of intriguing connections and building suspense…There is a good deal to enjoy here, particularly the richness of the two protagonists and their developing relationship.” —RT Book Reviews

About the author

Mary Burton loves writing suspense, researching law enforcement and forensic procedures, morning walks, baking, books, and tiny dachshunds. She also enjoys hunting down serial killers, which she does in her New York Times and USA Today bestselling novels of suspense and romance. Library Journal has compared her work to that of Lisa Jackson and Lisa Gardner, and Fresh Fiction likened her writing to that of James Patterson.
Mary is routinely featured among the top twenty writers in Amazon’s Author Rankings for romantic suspense, and her recent novel The Last Move claimed the number ten fiction slot in the Kindle eBooks Store.
Research is a favorite part of Mary’s day. She never tires of learning more about police work, evidence collection and analysis. She’s known for taking a hands-on approach, whether it means interviews with professionals in the field, forensic seminars or lessons at the firing range.
A Richmond native, Mary has lived there for most of her life. She is a graduate of Virginia’s Hollins University and worked in marketing before she began writing full time. Her first book was published in 2000 and she’s now the author of thirty-four published novels, five novellas and four works of contemporary women’s fiction written as Mary Ellen Taylor.
A member of International Thriller Writers, Sisters in Crime, Mystery Writers of America, Novelists, Inc., and Romance Writers of America, Mary is known for creating multiple suspense stories connected by characters, such as her recent The Forgotten Files novels. Her new book, Her Last Word, and The Last Move, break that mold.
When not traveling for research or visiting with readers at bookstores, book festivals and conferences, Mary remains very much a homebody. She and her husband spend time alternately enjoying and lamenting their empty nest and spoiling their four-legged babies Buddy, Bella and Tiki.

The story has a shifting timeline that was very challenging to keep up with. I was (seriously) tempted to construct a timeline on paper so that I didn't feel lost. The relationship between Kaitlin and John was a really slow simmer before they got together very late in the book (and simmer is generous). And having just finished the book, I'm left with a few questions that are not critical to the story but I see them as distracting loose ends.
Do yourself a favor and don't let this be your first Burton book; I found every other book to be far superior to this one and it pains me to write that.
With that being said this book was enjoyable to a certain extent, as nearly all of Burton's books are. I just think this one reminded me too much of others by her, and then there was Kaitlin who I just never ever connected with. As for the killer, I was kept guessing until about 3/4 of the way through when a certain conversation clued me in on who it was. There were definitely some twists and turns though and I can't say anything was ever too predictable or obvious either. In the end I thought the story was okay, but I know from past experience that Ms. Burton can do much better.
Pages & Kindle Locations: The story itself contained 353 pages and ended at location 4905 on my kindle device.
Detective Joe Adler has just returned back to work after a terrible accident. Now Adler, along with his partner Quinn, is investigating the new murders. It doesn’t take long for him to realize the new murders and Kaitlin’s questions about Gina’s disappearance are connected.
Mary Burton has written another intriguing and suspenseful book. The evolving relationship between Kaitlin and Adler is well written. You will not want to miss this stand-alone story.
“Her Last Words” is a good police procedural and awesome who-done-it as there are lots of nasty suspects, and really likable police. The main character, Kaitlin, is strong and brave as an adult, but really messed up as a teen. The storyline is complex, and entertaining, but I was relieved when I was finished reading. This is the first time I can say buying a paperback would have given me the ability to thumb through the pages, and realize how much jumping around there is by date. It also shows how important the customer reviews are to other readers. I can say however, I still love ❤️ my Kindle and don’t regret buying and reading this story!
