About the author

Peter Robinson grew up in Yorkshire, and now divides his time between Richmond and Canada. Peter has written twenty-four books in the Number One Bestselling DCI Banks series as well as two collections of short stories and three standalone novels, the most recent of which is Number One bestseller BEFORE THE POISON. Peter's critically acclaimed crime novels have won numerous awards in Britain, the United States, Canada and Europe, and are published in translation all over the world.
Peter's DCI Banks is now a major ITV1 drama by Left Bank productions. Stephen Tompkinson (Wild at Heart, Ballykissangel) plays Inspector Banks, and Andrea Lowe (The Bill, Murphy's Law) plays DI Annie Cabbot. The first series aired in Autumn 2011 with an adaptation of FRIEND OF THE DEVIL, the second in Autumn 2012, and the third in February 2014.
Peter's standalone novel BEFORE THE POISON won the IMBA's 2013 Dilys Award as well as the 2012 Arthur Ellis Award for Best Novel by the Crime Writers of Canada. This was Peter's sixth Arthur Ellis award.

Peter Robinson's writing draws the reader into the book and supports and propels one along the roads in Yorkshire and Toronto with the Chief Inspector. The time in Toronto seems extended and provided so many details that seem to distract from the story, not add to it.
Within the initial pages the reader engages with the four characters that form the core of the most likely villains in the book. The Chief Inspector faces the challenge of unraveling their relationships now and from years ago as well as their motives in order to solve the murders in the book. Throughout the book, the reader suspects and eventually learns the extent of evil developed in each character which guides their actions. A feeling persists that some twist in the extent of guilt each character bears will happen and eventually the twist materializes.
The author effectively utilizes his skills in character development, plot structure, and location details to write an engaging story.

This wide ranging story sees Banks travelling to Canada and to Oxford to try and unravel the skeins of evil which have a long history and which threaten to cause more deaths in the present. There are some particularly unpleasant characters in this story but all are well drawn and believable. There are some likeable ones too.
This is a well written novel which could be read as a standalone novel as there is enough background information to update a new reader with what is happening in the private lives of the series characters. I particularly enjoy the Yorkshire background and the atmosphere of the fells is brought vividly to life.

Please will you correct this error on your part and send Thee Hanging Valley book to my Kindle.

The story begins with a body found in Hanging Valley, a corpse with its face so badly damaged as to make it indistinguishable. Identifying the body leads Banks to another unsolved murder which took place in the same quiet area some five years earlier. Are the two murders linked & if so then how? The trail moves from the sleepy village & takes Banks as far as Canada in his search for the killer.
The characters include the Collier brothers who are the local powerful landowners, Sam Greenock who is desperate to be in their circle & Sam's downtrodden, God fearing wife Katie who has torments of her own.
I presume this book is set in the 70's or thereabouts as people are still smoking in pubs & not even the police seem to worry about drinking & driving. I liked the descriptions of the places (those of Canada were particularly good) & Mr Robinson put enough flesh on the bones of his characters to give them life.
I didn't find this riveting but still enjoyed it & would read more in the series.

Full marks to Welly Bob Books though for their customer service. The book was delivered very quickly and they were very quick to respond to my query and apologetic for the mix up and kindly said that they would refund the money. So I'd have no hesitation about using them again
