Eve Dallas is about o find her latest case is one filled with twists and turns that don’t make sense and will have her scrambling as she tries to discover the connection of who wanted Doctor Kent Abner dead.

When Kent Abner opens a package, he doesn’t anticipate dying within seconds as a toxic substance goes airborne and kills him. As Eve Dallas and her trusty partner, Det. Peabody try to figure out who would want to murder the friendly pediatrician, Eve has to sort through Kent’s past and when another dies in the same grisly manner, she is determined to find the madman behind it and stop another from dying.

GOLDEN IN DEATH is an amazing, enthralling story that will leave you breathless. Fifty books into this series and you wonder, what can the author do next to top the last book and J.D. Robb pulls out all the stops with this one. Her mystery of who the killer(s) were left me hanging until mid-way when I finally started seeing the clues as Eve, Peabody and the gang rustled them up as well. The story is full of twists and turns that just had me on the edge of my seat and I was glued to the pages till the very end since I wanted to see how this story would end. GOLDEN IN DEATH is a true marvel as the author does a masterful job capturing the confusion Eve finds when she is assigned this baffling case. I just could not put this book down, even to go to sleep. It was that good.

What makes this series so beloved with her readers is the way the characters continue to grow with each book. Eve and Raork especially are connected on a soul level that comes across perfectly in GOLDEN IN DEATH. They have been through so much in the last several books that it is nice to see the connection between them grow stronger in this new book. Some may complain that not all of Eve’s friends, etc are involved in this fiftieth book but then we wouldn’t have a story that is so compelling and addicting. We got the core group (Eve, Roark, Peabody, McNabb, etc) involved with this one and it works just fine with the group that is needed by Eve. With an addition of a new secondary character or two, the reader can enjoy a storyline that could be cut right from the pages in the future.

GOLDEN IN DEATH works because the author delivers a complex mystery to solve filled with compelling characters that literally step from the pages and into your living room. They are bold, well written and just downright amazing in my opinion. This is an author that knows how to craft a story that will leave you breathless. If you enjoy a high-octane story that will eave you eager for more than I urge you to run to grab GOLDEN IN DEATH. It’s truly a masterpiece and now I can’t see where this author goes next in the fifty-first book.

As usual, the suspense storyline is exciting and keeps you thinking. Most of our beloved familiar characters are here. We have most of the usual elements of an In Death book and a few nice, quiet moments between Eve and Roarke.

This series is by far my favorite series and JD Robb (Nora Roberts) is clearly the unparalleled master of creating a universe, developing characters and maintaining that universe and those characters over the long haul without compromising the quality or integrity of the franchise. 50 books plus nearly 20 novellas in anthologies over the course of 25 years. I just don’t see it ever happening again. And man am I counting on it continuing for a long while yet!

As someone who has read all the books multiple times and is now working my way through all of them on audio as well, I made a list of the characters I expected to see, the items I expected to see referenced and particular scenes I expected to read based on what I’ve come to expect from the books.

I was pretty damn close on all three lists. Only three people on my list weren’t at least mentioned. I was shocked at who did not share page time with Eve though and how small a role others played. (No spoilers!) In terms of the items I had a list of 15 that appear in nearly every book and only two did not here but I was super shocked about them, especially one of them, as they are such iconic representations of the start of the Roarke and Eve relationship. As far as the scenes go, I had 13 that always appear and only one did not, again a major shock given it’s role from the beginning.

The book lived up to my expectations with this series and Robb’s craft. I hate that I read it in one sitting because now it’s over and I’ve got seven months to wait for the next one...which of course I’ve already pre-ordered. You can’t go wrong with this series!

I really love how she uses a great cast of characters old and new, and such diversity in so many. Very rarely do I see stereotyped descriptions by Eve herself, though there are plenty of bigots in her stories that do.

Still this was a good read for me, and not great. Don't get me wrong I still love the series, and will keep reading.

I just wish she used her secondary cast of characters to greater (better?) effect. I realize she can't possibly use all of them every book, it would have too many side stories and be too bloated. Still I would like to see one or two get more involved in the cases.

I still love Eve, Roarke & Peabody just as much as always, but I miss getting to see the rest of the cast even in just little bits.

The story mystery was a bit gruesome, and while I liked that this time we weren't subjected to the bad guy point of view too early in the story, I think I figured it out too early anyway.

I have to say the victims families were well written and I even cried, which I really don't often do.

Still I found how the murder weapon was created, a little... unbelievable? Someone who had been a drug addict that long, being that clever just seemed a bit off to me, especially given the earliest suspicions of who had created it.

Other than that I really enjoyed the story right up until the very end, and it just didn't have the big finale or wrap up I'm used to. It wasn't a bad ending, it just felt a little flat compared to her usual flare.

Still a good 4 star read.

Throughout this series some reviewers have complained because not all of Eve's ever-growing circle of friends have been included in each book. While Roarke's Irish family appears to have disappeared off the face of the earth (and the other planets in which he has an interest), and there are lots of characters from earlier books from whom I'd like to see an occasional appearance (Nixie Swisher; Father Chale Lopez; Ariel Greenfield, etc), Golden in Death, although there's a brief appearance from Charles and Louise, and a heartwarming encounter with Dennis Mira, concentrates wholly on Eve and Peabody's tracking down of the killers using an extremely localised noxious gas to kill specific targets. We see all of Eve's investigative team, Morris, Berenski, Harvo, but, other than a brief nod to the ongoing bad-taste socks and ties competition within the bullpen, they're there purely to carry out their duties in the background.
The investigation covers a part of society to which Robb returns often, and her battles with lawyers, arrogant spoilt brats, and those who consider themselves above the law are well up to standard. No spoilers, but you really have to read Peabody's response to someone who pours scorn on Dallas, state school attendees, and Free-Agers - brilliant!
While I can see no value in the sex passages between Dallas and Roarke - possibly a hangover from the days of M&B and the requirement for sex every so many pages - there are some genuinely moving moments between the two of them, and I'm living in hope that Eve's finally getting rid of some of the unnecessary baggage from her past, which, at one stage in the series, became almost a cut-and-paste in every book.
Golden in Death is worth every penny, and now I'll have to wait at least another 6 months for the next one to appear.

There was a time when J D Robb could supplement this straightforward investigation format with sub-plots, character development, humour, hilarious one-liners and a range of background stories involving interesting secondary characters and their lives. For the best example of the aforesaid, try Innocent in Death which has all the aforementioned ingredients and two very satisfying outcomes, one personal and one professional. This is a solid story but without the range of characters and scenarios that always made these books so multi-faceted. There are two more books in this series ready for publication later in 2020 and in 2021. This makes me feel they are being churned out to keep a loyal audience happy. What a shame! J D Robb seems to have exhausted many of the plot themes that kept the series moving forward. This is disappointing considering what she is capable of.

I must admit I expected something spectacular for the 50th edition - as we received from "From New York to Dallas" but this was not the case. Very much "same old, same old", nothing new and exciting and very predictable.
It was lacking in the normal sparkling dialogue between the characters and any interest in the plot didn't start until a third of the way through and then it was nothing special.
I have given this book 4 starts because I am a great fan of Nora Roberts, but had it been written by another author I would probably given it 2 stars.
Sorry Nora but not one of your best.

Let me state I love these books , Eve DAllas is a brilliant character, add in Roarke..... And the ever growing for me of friends as Eve matures and starts healing g inside and opens herself up to LOVE. I have all the In Death books in book and kindle form sometimes in both .. I have all on mp3 ......NOT Golden In Death..... This book was disappointing to say the least , number 50 should be something special this wasn't.... Sorry Nora didn't like it at all , it was boaring.... But one unlike booking 50 is not bad ....looking forward to shadows in death

I think I've read all the books in this series and enjoyed them all, but this is one of the best. I like the way the characters are developing and we're learning more about them. Plus the plot's a cracker and the writing is clear.
One minor thing: maybe not everyone would say/think 'because boss' or similar - some would use a complete phrase. Peabody might if Dallas does, but Grange too? Other than that I loved it. Can't wait for the next one: I always pre-order then get a nice surprise when it appears in my library.
