Counterterrorism operative Mitch Rapp and his colleague Mike Nash may have finally met their match. The CIA has intercepted two terrorist cells, but a third—led by a dangerous mastermind determined to become al-Qaeda’s new leader—is believed to be on the loose. With such a terrifyingly deadly enemy out there, Rapp needs the best of the best by his side and he believes he has that with Nash.
Together, they have made careers out of meeting violence with extreme violence and have never wavered in the top-secret fight against the war on terrorism. Both have been forced to lie to virtually every single person they care about, and both have soldiered on with the knowledge that their lethal tactics have saved thousands of lives. But certain leaders on Capitol Hill are pushing to have men like Rapp and Nash put on a short leash. And then one spring afternoon in Washington, DC, everything changes.
With nonstop action and ripped-from-the-headlines writing, Extreme Measures is the political thriller of our time and proves once again that, “in the world of black-ops thrillers, Mitch Rapp continues to be among the best of the best” (Booklist, starred review).

If you like books with a super secret hero former navy SEAL warrior who kills bad guys you will probably enjoy it but it's more political than normal which doesn't really work.
The book starts with Mitch Rapp, superstar CIA assassin trying to interrogate/torture some Al-Qaeda bad guys. To stop you from feeling sorry for them the author has made them truly awful i.e. one blows up schools with kids in them and the other recruits people with down syndrome to use as suicide bombers. However just as Mitch is about to beat the details of a terror attack on US soil from the nasty lips of the terrorists he is interrupted by some people who clearly believe torture is wrong even if the subjects are clearly and unequivocally evil.
The rest of the book spends a lot of time with various US senators trying to drag Mitch and his colleagues through a number of senate committee meetings to prove to the public that the CIA is torturing people. Whilst this is happening the terrorist cell is finishing its training and is sneaking into Washington.
The end is pretty incredible with the terrorists actually actual the Senators who seem to hell bent on protecting their rights. The main political character does the biggest U-turn possible.
The action is enjoyable and the CIA team are the same as the other books but it feels like all of the other characters in the book are total extremes from the aforementioned terrorists to Senators who are keener on making themselves look good than actually stopping terrorist attacks. There are no normal people in this book
It is a good page turner which didn't take me long to read but it tries to take the moral high ground and fails. I hope the next Vince Flynn book reverts to pure action and less politics
