Enhance your purchase
In a series of instructive and conversational chapters, Mosley demonstrates how to master fiction's most essential elements: character and character development, plot and story, voice and narrative, context and description, and more. The result is a vivid depiction of the writing process, from the blank page to the first draft to rewriting, and rewriting again. Throughout, Elements of Fiction is enriched by brilliant demonstrative examples that Mosley himself has written here for the first time.
Inspiring, accessible, and told in a voice both trustworthy and wise, Elements of Fiction will intrigue and encourage writers and readers alike.

At once philosophical and instructive, Elements of Fiction will have you thinking differently about the art of storytelling in order to truly stand out as a writer. And, speaking of "voice," in true Mosley fashion, he doesn't mince words when it comes to the realities of the writing life. This is not a book about how to write a novel; it is not about structure or plot or character arcs. For that, you probably need to read his previous monograph, This Year You Write Your Novel. No, this book is more about how you might approach the writing, how (and where and why) to dig deep, deeper for the meaning behind the meaning, the words that transcend the words on the page. I am certain I will return to this monograph again and again as I continue my writing journey.
I was worrying about how to show a flood of memories without resorting to cliches. Thinking about blue, green, blue sky, green grass, brown dirt, red ball, blue, green helped me write a powerful scene.
Thank you, Walter Mosley, for taking time to write this monograph.
Overall good resource of learning hot to process the essential elements of writing.
Mosley’s follow up craft book to THIS YEAR YOU WRITE YOUR NOVEL provides more examples and expands on the concepts discussed in the previous book. While I enjoyed ELEMENTS OF FICTION, I liked THIS YEAR YOU WRITE YOUR NOVEL a bit better. Nevertheless, Mosley’s writing wisdom and gorgeous prose is always a pleasure to read.

Each page turned drew me deeper in, held me gently, swirled me around.
At the end, though I didn't know it, I was in love. With the words, with the feelings, with the depth of love put into the pieces.
Okay, there's one bit I disagree with, but if I didn't disagree with something it would have been less interesting.
Overall, this is the most delightful and endearing book on the craft of writing - that isn't overtly a book on the craft of writing - I have ever read.
I'd recommend reading this book only after you have a few stories under your belt.
