I’m drowning under the weight of my father’s debts. Working myself to the bone, I know that if I don’t pay them off in time, the sadistic creditors will take everything: our home, our respected name, and, worst of all, my two beautiful sisters.
To save my family, I agree to do something reckless: marry a wealthy and mysterious stranger, who offers me a wicked bargain I can’t afford to refuse.
However, his bargain comes with one terrifying catch. Because my husband-to-be is a Kylorr. One of the most fearsome alien races, the Kylorr are beastly monsters, all muscle and menace, with powerful wings, depraved cravings, and berserker-like rages. The worst part?
They survive on blood.
Cold and cruel, Azur of House Kaalium, the High Lord of Laras, demands me as his blood bride. To feed from me. To use my body in whatever way he wishes.
But if Azur expects a demure, submissive wife, he’ll be in for a rude awakening. My new husband might crave my surrender but there’s one thing I’ll never give him.
My heart…even if he wants to shatter it into a million pieces.

About the author

Zoey Draven has been writing stories for as long as she can remember. Her love affair with the romance genre started with her grandmother's old Harlequin paperbacks and has continued ever since. As a Top 100 Amazon bestselling author, now she gets to write the happily-ever-afters—with a cosmic, otherworldly twist, of course!
When she's not writing, she's probably drinking one too many cups of coffee, hiking in the redwoods, or spending time with her family.

📝 tropes: fated mates, arranged marriage, enemies to lovers/hate to love, angst, alien-vampire berserker hero, revenge
🌶 spice: 4/5 (biting, knotting)
❌ CW: death of parent, suicide, depression, alcoholism
did i start this book at 7am and binge it? ✅
was i in pain because i finished it so quickly? ✅
do i have any regrets? ❌
i officially declare myself a devoted passenger on the #rideordieforzoeydraventrain because holy crap you guys, this new series of hers is PHENOMENAL.
I DON’T KNOW WHAT THE HECK ZOEY DOES BUT every single book in her horde king series has been 4-5🌟’s and NOW, SHE’S DONE IT AGAIN with this alien-vampire berserker series AHHHHHHH!!!!!
truly one of my favorite authors solidified now because she writes some of the best tropetastic books with angst and the perfect level of spice and slow burn enemies to lovers romance i LITERALLY CRYYYYYY at the sheer mastery of it.
this first book follows Gemma, the eldest-daughter of our hero, Azur’s, enemy .. in order to get revenge, an arranged marriage takes place between both and the most delicious hate-to-love/enemies to lovers romance ensues!
i absolutely adored these two omg. they are both such fiery personalities with a stubborn streak a mile wide.. i ate up but also KNEW that Gemma would never back down from ANYONE, even a fearsome Kylorr.. it made their interactions so HAWTTT and magnetic LOVED IT 🥵 on the flip side, all that stubbornness hid the vulnerability and suffering that both deal with, particularly our girl Gemma - #eldestdaughtertings of having to DO EVERY SINGLE DAMN THING IN THE WORLD and never being able to let go … so relatable. it broke my heart seeing her cry after always having to lock it away in order to take care of her younger sisters/the family problems 🥺😭 and i especially loved that Azur became a safe space (eventually lol) for her to go to and cry and be vulnerable (and vice versa). the angst at the start of their romance when Azur obviously tried denying his growing feelings towards her but every time she’d look like she’d cry, he’d literally died inside UGH that’s the SHIT I LOVEEEE 😩
- “I was making small noises I’d never heard before, like a snarling, sad little beast.”
- “For once, her voice went wobbly. She had the uncanny ability to keep her voice sword-sharp, even when she was crying or upset. But hearing it waver now made my chest squeeze. No. I didn’t want to feel anything for this female.”
the slow build up of him realizing he’s falling for her is TRULY my addiction .. him pining for her if they’re separated for too long or when they got into an argument and he said some mean stuff and had to apologize UGH YESSSS GROVEL ON UR KNEES BEGGGGG (esp when all the side characters side eye him for making her upset LOL like Kalia and Rivin😂)
- I was pining. At night, I stood outside the door to her rooms, hoping to catch a tendril of her scent, debating with myself in silent, drawn-out, maddening arguments right in the hallway.
- “I am sorry,” I told her. Apologizing the way my own mother had taught me to. Holding one’s eyes, looking deep, and not rushing the words. Elongating them, even, dragging them out until they were gentle and soft.
- I didn’t care much for steam cakes. I thought the sweetness was sickening, but I had forced one down my throat when my wife had handed me one, watching her smile widen as I did. Since when did it please me to see her pleased?
also can we talk about the storm scene BC HELLO TOP FAVE SCENES UGH. another similarity we both share and that I ADORE seeing in romances (hey bridgerton S2) is the FMC having a fear of storms and the hero comforting her LIKE OMGG IT WAS TRULY SO HEART ACHY BUT BEAUTIFUL UGHKJFG😭
- “What’s wrong?” he asked, his voice oddly soft. Gentle.
- “I’d always been so focused on making sure my sisters were watched over during a storm that I’d never truly noticed my own deep, deep fear of them. Until now. Right now. In this place, in this keep.
the scene where he first flies her over the sea… absolute magic and you could tell he was in love far before he ever admits it… I ADORED THAT SCENE and loved that GEMMA got to experience that pure joy.. being with Azur and having him take care of her instead of her shouldering all the burdens was so wonderful and emotional to see ugh😭🥺
- A graceful arm reached out, and I watched with bated breath as she skimmed her fingertips across the water, sending sparks of the salty sea rising in their wake. Gemma laughed, low and husky before it was carried away by the wind. She was burned into my memory. Just l like this. I didn’t think I would ever forget this. How could I have ever thought her plain
- when I’d found the discrepancies in these records, I’d felt that familiar creeping of nausea
and dread. Another problem to solve. Another anxious ridden thing that would eat me up inside until it was dispelled. But not with Azur. He’d taken it from me in the blink of an eye. He’d taken control. It was freeing.
- “You’re here,” I whispered, wiping my tears shamelessly against his vest, “and I feel like such a mess.” His arms tightened. Softly, Azur said, “You don’t have to worry anymore, kyrana. I’ll take care of everything. I’ll take care of you. I promise.”
ofc ofc the romance was truly perfection but equally so, the SPICE. gurllll!! so HAWT with the biting action and the possessiveness and blood mate situation🥵
so, yes. i absolutely adored this book and i understand this review is truly incoherent and lacking organization but i just have all the disparate but raging thoughts and love for this book and i SO SO SO recommend it and all of Zoey’s romances! pls go buy and read it :) ’tis all, goodbyeee.
First, things I enjoyed:
1) Well-written characters, solid plot and intriguing sub-plot, excellent world-building. The story sucks you in and the characters keep you invested. I love that there's a REAL story which the author takes seriously. Real conversations and details which other PNR romance authors often overlook in their haste to get to the 'good part'.
2) I'm happy sex was used as part of the character development and plot. It's a reflection of their relationship: blossoming and deepening as their trust does, changing as their relationship does. I've only ever seen this done in Ramona Mainstrom's PNR books, so I'm thrilled this seems to be a thing that's catching on with other authors.
There are a few things I'm struggling with that keep me from giving 5 stars:
1) I have a SERIOUS problem with the fact Azur was planning on 'breaking' Gemma as part of his plot to destroy her family. And not just is the gross bedroom dominance / abusive relationship way, but completely freaking destroy her as a being in the void of moral decency / serial killer way. Glad that wasn't in the "Look Inside" or I wouldn't have bought the book.
I appreciate that the author didn't make Azur outright abusive, but he planned horrible things for her -- someone who never hurt him or anyone else -- to punish *someone else* and was carrying through with the plan.
The only thing that saves Gemma from this nightmarish fate is the romance trope of 'fated mates'. Not compassion or decency -- that came later. His d*ck and that magical connection to her which makes it nearly impossible for Azur to live without her is the ONLY reason he didn't follow through on the promised abuse and destruction .....
>>>> Gemma wasn't valuable or deserving of dignity and respect in his eyes. She only value was due to the fact that he physically needs her as part of the 'fated mates' bonding. Then, he started to consider maybe not destroying her .... I mean. WOW. That's NOT cool.
I appreciate the author driving home that Azur grew a conscious, felt guilty, and wanted to redeem himself, but nowhere does it mention he's NOT the type of guy who would actually do something so disgusting to someone. And his WHOLE family is totally okay with it. Not one said, "Hey, she didn't do anything to deserve this. We should go after the person who did hurt us."
What if she wasn't his mate?? Think for a moment what he is capable and willing to doing to an innocent woman ....
I don't care how mind-blowing the sex is , but Gemma 's seriously okay with being with a guy who would do those things to someone?? Doing it 'for family' doesn't make it less disturbing. If I wanted mobster mentality, I would read that. I don't.
The "Psychopathic Monster transforms into Good Mate" thing is not endearing or romantic.
2) Can we PLEASE stop promoting toxic masculinity? The Alpha-hole BS is tiresome. Physically marking her and forcing her to put the marks on display like a dog peeing on his territory = huge turn off.
Also, I like dirty talk, too, but .... The same dirty talk in almost every steamy romance is kinda gross. I get that the "C" words is acceptable in other countries -- that's on me to deal with -- but there's no need to degrade your partner with name calling. Even if you're going to tease them for enjoying what you're doing, there's a positive non-shaming way to do it.
3) The "she's a virgin/inexperienced compared to his HUGE number of sex partners" trope. I mean, good job on using her culture as an excuse for that, but ... SIGH ... Please, stop contributing to the sex shaming mind-set of lead women in romance.
Not related to my rating, but I still want to touch on:
1) Do not make your readers leave your sales page to go hunting for them. The author tells us there are trigger warnings, but not what they are. You want to know? You have to track down her site ( The Look Inside feature doesn't let you follow a link or even copy/paste it), hunt for the book on her site, and then find the warnings.
No. If you're not going to tell me in the blurb, put it in the front of your book so I can see it when I'm reading the "Look Inside" or downloaded sample. NOPE. Won't do that again. Tell me what the triggers are in the blurb or front matter or I don't buy your book. My time is valuable, treat me with respect.
2) I appreciate that the author hasn't written the second book yet and probably doesn't have a sample chapter to include. Totally fair, but if you tell me there's going to be another book, PLEASE give me an idea of what it's about. This couple again? A different couple embroiled in the over-arching plot? WHAT? Give me a 2-3 sentence pitch or "Look for X and Y's adventure in Book 2". Pretty pleases and thank you.
Okay -- all that and I still give it 4 stars. Plus, I will check out the author's other books with fingers crossed that the men in them aren't written in toxic tropes.
Top reviews from other countries

At this point my full TSTL radar was going crazy. The writing is so descriptive that it wouldn't fail mentioning that she had super human powers of defying laws of existence by not eating or drinking for 4 days, then giving blood but still prancing about super charged.
It upsets me when authors make a point of having heroines survive on air, when there's a eating scene suddenly they lose their appetite or some other ridiculousness. There is nothing impressive about a heroine proudly showing off her skinny bones because of bad eating habits.

It took me a bit to start appreciating Azur as I wasn’t a fan of his attitude or the reasons for it. But Gemma was everything I wanted her to be : generous and vulnerable, funny and compassionate, headstrong and prideful when necessary (he clearly didn’t deserve her to bend for him in any way).
I liked the plot and the idea of the Kylorr. I am also very much intrigued by the siblings (except we know who as I don’t like him) and hope the next book will be Kythel.
The writing was good and the pace flowed. Not too rushed or drown out, there was a good balance in the story. A pleasant surprise indeed.
