In Final Option, Juan Cabrillo fights the worst enemy from his past to the terrifying and unexpected ending created by the Grand Master of Adventure, Clive Cussler, in the latest action-packed thriller in his number one New York Times best-selling series.
When the CIA realizes the identities of three American spies in Brazil have been compromised, they turn to Juan Cabrillo and the crew of the Oregon to rescue the agents. What seems a routine operation turns out to be a trap designed by Juan Cabrillo's greatest enemy, a man driven by hate to seek the ultimate revenge. At the heart of the plot is a state-of-the-art ship that is identical to the Oregon: same weaponry, same technology, same ability to evade capture. The only thing it doesn't have is Cabrillo and his talented crew.
But will they be enough to go up against the one ship that rivals their own? The crew of the Oregon must piece together a series of disturbing events, including the mysterious sinking of a nuclear attack submarine and the possible discovery of a WWII-era weapon that was thought to be lost in the jungles of Brazil, in the ultimate game of cat and mouse.

MOST of the “Cussler” books are WELL WORTH THE TIME & EFFORT! There is some mediocrity, But Who is Perfect? That has Authored THAT Many Novels?? KRE
Given the events here this seems to be a reset of sorts for this series, and I'll be curious to see how things go in the next entry. I might be mistaken, but I believe this was the last book Cussler had a hand in writing before his unfortunate passing, at least in the Oregon Files. If that was the case, this is a fitting finale for a wonderful author that will be greatly missed.
FINAL OPTION captivated me and kept my interest throughout. Juan Cabrillo and his Oregon crew had their hands full in this story, and several times, I thought it would be the end of them. Their adversary had planned everything and ensured he had the odds stacked in his favor. They set many traps for the Oregon crew. Will they all survive THE FINAL OPTION?
Highly recommend this book to all interested in historical fiction and adventures on the high seas.
Harrowing and engaging, and keeps the pages turning.
RANDOM STREAM OF CONSCIOUSNESS NOTES AND OBSERVATIONS:
—p. 1: Um, were German submarines in either World War ever actually assigned names as opposed to mere alphanumeric designators (like U-20, U-505, etc.)?
“Irre Waffe” = Insanity Weapon
—p. 9: South African–made Vektor R5 assault rifles!
“In fact, they were destined for Nicaraguan rebels who were going to use them in fighting the corrupt socialist government that was allowing the drug cartels to run wild.” Down with Daniel Ortega!
—p. 23: “He was looking forward to a generous cut of Brazil’s best prime rib and a bottle of well-aged cabernet sauvignon at a cigar bar and jazz club later that evening.” Aahh, Juan Cabrillo, Bon Vivant!
—p. 38: “and a baggy T-shirt that had the name of one of his favorite heavy metal bands, Nuclear Lobotomy, who, according to the bloody lettering on the shirt, toured with another band called Hate Gorgon.” Haha, creative.
—p. 66: “Raven used to be an Army Military Police investigator, and nothing escaped her observation.” In other words, Army Criminal Investigative Division (CID)?
—p. 68: ““Tangerine liqueur from Madagascar,” nice one.
—p. 203: filet mignon with béarnaise sauce, 007 would approve!
—p. 262: Er, wouldn’t Chinese sailors be using “kilometres” instead of “miles?”
—p. 266: “Then he realized that the movie playing was The Princess Bride. But in this case, all of the major male characters’ faces had been replaced with the face of Shrek. Although it was strange to hear the green ogre say, ‘Hello, my name is Inigo Montoya,’ the effect was seamless.” Haha.

Somehow, however far fetched the tale, the more I enjoy it. This one (co-authored with Boyd Morrison) is right out there - as a doppelganger of the Oregon threatens Juan, the crew, the ship and even the CIA!
I enjoyed every bit and couldn't put the book down. He may not be everyone's cup of yea but, if you like Clive Cussler books, you'll enjoy this one!

[edit]
I didn't know when writing this, that Cussler has departed us. Amazon's author bio really needs updating to reflect this.

Although the ship is supposed to be one of a kind it turns out that there is another identical one that is conspiring to frame the crew and the chairman of countless crimes because of past events. They almost succeed in doing it but are stopped in their tracks by superior cunning and planning by Jaun Cabrillo and his team.
I am looking forward to the next adventure of this storyline.

Thank You Clive Cussler for Many Many Great Books over the years & thanks to your Family & Friends they will carry on Your Tradition RIP.
