Laboratory acids, also known as chemistry acids, are substances with a pH less than seven that are used for various testing, preparation, cleaning, preservation, and processing applications. Often required for experiments in chemistry, acids range from food-grade substances such as citric and ascorbic acid to highly-corrosive substances such as hydrochloric and sulfuric acid. Chemical acids are available in powder form and in solution. A Material Data Safety Sheet (MSDS) that documents the composition of the product, potential effects of exposure, and handling guidelines is commonly included with a laboratory acid. Certain lab acids meet particular grading standards such as United States Pharmacopeia (USP) or Food Chemical Codex (FCC).
