In 1906, the western states of America suffer a string of bank robberies by a single man who then cold-bloodedly murders any and all witnesses, and vanishes without a trace. Fed up by the depredations of “The Butcher Bandit,” the U.S. government brings in the best man it can find: a tall, lean, no-nonsense detective named Isaac Bell, who has caught thieves and killers from coast to coast.
But Bell has never had a challenge like this one. From Arizona to Colorado to the streets of San Francisco during its calamitous earthquake and fire, he pursues a fiend who seems to draw pleasure from the challenge and a woman who may to hold the key to the man’s identity. As Bell begins to suspect a new term used among top psychologists, sociopath, may describe his target, the Butcher Bandit turns the chase around on him. The hunter becomes the hunted. And soon, it will take all of Bell’s skills not merely to prevail . . . but to survive.
Filled with intricate plotting, Cussler’s signature dazzling set pieces, and not one but two extraordinary villains, The Chase is the master working at the height of his powers.

About the author

Clive Cussler began writing novels in 1965 and published his first work featuring his continuous series hero, Dirk Pitt(R), in 1973. His first non-fiction, The Sea Hunters, was released in 1996. The Board of Governors of the Maritime College, State University of New York, considered The Sea Hunters in lieu of a Ph.D. thesis and awarded Cussler a Doctor of Letters degree in May, 1997. It was the first time since the College was founded in 1874 that such a degree was bestowed.
Cussler is an internationally recognized authority on shipwrecks and the founder of the National Underwater and Marine Agency, (NUMA) a 501C3 non-profit organization (named after the fictional Federal agency in his novels) that dedicates itself to preserving American maritime and naval history. He and his crew of marine experts and NUMA volunteers have discovered more than 60 historically significant underwater wreck sites including the first submarine to sink a ship in battle, the Confederacy's Hunley, and its victim, the Union's Housatonic; the U-20, the U-boat that sank the Lusitania; the Cumberland, which was sunk by the famous ironclad, Merrimack; the renowned Confederate raider Florida; the Navy airship, Akron, the Republic of Texas Navy warship, Zavala, found under a parking lot in Galveston, and the Carpathia, which sank almost six years to-the-day after plucking Titanic's survivors from the sea.
In September, 1998, NUMA - which turns over all artifacts to state and Federal authorities, or donates them to museums and universities - launched its own web site for those wishing more information about maritime history or wishing to make donations to the organization.
In addition to being the Chairman of NUMA, Cussler is also a fellow in both the Explorers Club of New York and the Royal Geographic Society in London. He has been honored with the Lowell Thomas Award for outstanding underwater exploration.
Cussler's books have been published in more than 40 languages in more than 100 countries. His past international bestsellers include Pacific Vortex, Mediterranean Caper, Iceberg, Raise the Titanic, Vixen 03, Night Probe, Deep Six, Cyclops, Treasure, Dragon, Sahara, Inca Gold, Shock Wave, Flood Tide, Atlantis Found, Valhalla Rising, Trojan Odyssey, Black Wind, Treasure of Kahn and Arctic Drift (the last three with his son, Dirk Cussler) as well as The Chase; the nonfiction books The Sea Hunters, The Sea Hunters II and Clive Cussler and Dirk Pitt (R) Revealed; the NUMA(R) Files novels Serpent, Blue Gold, Fire Ice, White Death, Lost City, Polar Shift, The Navigator and Medusa (written with Paul Kemprecos); and the Oregon Files novels Sacred Stone and Golden Buddha (written with Craig Dirgo) and Dark Watch, Skeleton Coast, Plague Ship and Corsair (written with Jack Du Brul).
Clive Cussler lives in Arizona.

The Chase is a whole different beast since it's set in the early 1900s. The story follows investigator Isaac Bell, a member of the famed Van Dorn Detective Agency, in his quest to apprehend The Butcher Bandit, a highly intelligent and seemingly uncatchable bank robber responsible for numerous hold ups and the murders of over three dozen people.
Bell is an intriguing main character. With his photographic memory, aristocratic background, charming personality, and dedication to justice he reminds me a lot of Preston & Child's agent Pendergast, another series I'm a big fan of. The 1900's setting is a refreshing change from the usual modern day ships and deep ocean submersibles from most Cussler books. The villains are suitably despicable in their actions, making it easy to want to see their downfall. It did take a little while to get me interested, but the book gets better with each page and the eponymous chase sequence, featuring a couple of high powered steam locomotives, was great reading.
A solid debut for an interesting new series. Looking forward to seeing where this goes with Book 2.

The Chase, is a page-turner the will have you hanging on the edge of your seats. Cussler, dose a wonderfully great job of getting you the reader interlaced and involved in this classic story of good vs. evil, with a little bit or romance tossed in the mix. His level of detail will soon have you feeling as if you, yourself are sitting right there in box car across from to the killer called the "Butcher Bandit" hearing and feeling the repeated rhythmic beats of the train as it rolls along the tracks. Your hart will be skipping a beat and your breath will be taking away, while you wipe the mud out of your eyes. You find yourself sitting in a 1906 classic open cockpit car locked in a 24 hour high speed chase across California's dusty dirt roads in pursuit of one of the most ruthless thrill killers of all time, chasing and hunting him down. Then just when you think, the chase is over and you feel as if you can take a deep breath. Cusselr, will have you back on the edge of your seats as you are transported back with Bell in the midst of the great San Francisco earthquake. Cussler, will have you feeling the ground shaking, smelling smoke and death as he has you fully immersed in the devastation and destruction of 1906 San Francisco. The chase is not over "Ruskin," the Butcher Bandit" is back on the run, with Bell in hot purist. Who will win in this ultimate battle of wits. Has Detective Bell really met his match in the, Butcher Bandit? Just when you think, you know what is coming around the corner and how everything will end Cussler will leave you hanging with the most unexpected cliffhanger of a conclusion ever.
Clive Cusslers's "The Chase" is a detailed novel that filled with suspense, adventure and never-ending action. He has painted a very interesting, intriguing and vivid picture of what the American life was like at the turn-of-the-century, and for a new setting and cast of characters. I have to consider this one of "Clive Cusslers" best works to date. What are you waiting for

What let's the book down somewhat is that large chunks of guidebook like prose are regularly shoved in the text, for instance when Bell checks into the hotel we get a paragraph describing when the hotel was built, who by and in what style. It's very distracting and I felt it spoilt the flow of the book.
My other major concern is around the conclusion of the book where several acts of nature play a major role. It felt as though Cussler couldn't quite work out how to tie things up and so reached for the old 'deus ex machina' to tidy things up.
A fun ride but I don't feel any great desire to join Bell for any of his further adventures.

A well written and engaging story that keeps you reading till the end.
