Bucktown was a blaxploitation film featuring Fred Williamson as Duke and Pam Grier as Aretha. The story is about Duke and Aretha fighting against the injustices of the racist police, but then having to turn on their friends who are engulfed by greed.
The opening scene sets up the theme as two cops beat up a black man accused of stealing from some of the officers’ poker pals. Duke arrives in town just in time to see the police finish the man off, take his money and pocket it for themselves.
Duke runs into the police himself when they demand protection money and he refuses. That leads to the conflict as Duke takes on the whole department. What happens next is like a black fantasy as Duke and his friends don’t just stand up to the police but attack them. The problems don’t end however for Duke as his friends now feel entitled and he’s got to deal with them.
I have to say how Duke dealt with the police was completely unexpected. Like I said it was like a black person’s dream. I also appreciate how it showed how Buck’s friends were greedy just like the police. Overall, it made Bucktown better than your usual blaxploitation film because it not only dealt with taking it to the man, but then showed blacks had plenty of problems of their own.
