About the Author

Matthew 'Ollie' Ollerton is a former Special Forces soldier and a member of the Directing Staff on Channel 4's hit show SAS: Who Dares Wins. Ollie's military career began at the age of 18 when he joined the Royal Marine Commandos and toured operationally in Northern Ireland and in Iraq for Operation Desert Storm. He subsequently spent six years in the Special Boat Service rising to team leader, before working in Iraq as a private security contractor and carrying out charity work in South-East Asia. Ollie now spends his time as a corporate training entrepreneur for his company Break-Point, an ambassador for the Royal Marines Charity and a director of the mental health charity StrongMen. --This text refers to the paperback edition.

If you're looking for "war stories", look elsewhere. Likewise if you're looking for secrets about the SAS or SBS, or other militaria. This is a book about someone who managed to make many mistakes, but get out the other side and find a way to make a living making a difference. Ollerton pretty much did things the hard way every time, but managed to keep his honest core, and that's what makes this worth reading.

I first saw him on youtube doing interviews and 30 minutes in, I was on here looking up his book and bought it instantly. Most of what he talked about in the interviews he talks about in the book. His interviews were amazing and filled with details about every event he went through. So knowing that I thought the book would dive even deeper into his story. But I was wrong. The book is very flat, no real detail at all about amazing life events he went through. lt was very hard to push through his book knowing the storys before hand and having to read them as if they were foot notes. If you want to really get the full story watch his interviews. This guy is awesome. I'm still happy I bought the book to support him. I want to give his second book a try, maybe his writing style will be better at a "how to" book instead. I give Ollie a 10 but this book only a 3, I rather hear him tell his stories any day of the week instead.

I started this a put it down but I’m glad I came back to it. Unfortunately it doesn’t quench the thirst for a bit of Mittying over SBS selection and operations but there is a bit in there. I’m fact most of the operational stuff is missing but I did enjoy the authors’ honest and frank style of writing. There are many angles to this autobiography and I felt a real empathy toward his struggles to find happiness. Its a bit hard to describe the book but it’s definitely worth a read.

This book is stuffed with contradictions. Ollerton wants to portray himself as 'breaking the mould' but also maintains that Special Forces personnel have to be rigid and comply. He wants to give an impression of a warrior, protector but his personal life throughout is a mess by his own admissions and explanations. It's a tawdry, squalid tale of a geezah with a beer or Rum and Coke in one mitt, revolver or gun in t'other being breezily irresponsible. I'm chuffed off as it's tat. I'll give two stars as the spelling was spot on, mostly.

I found the book tedious in it's repeated self absorption of being misunderstood, the inevitable abuse of booze and drugs, and his shabby treatment of and lack of respect for the women who shared his world.
