Editorial Reviews

Review

"How they love the old boxcar!"

"But when tomorrow came, the children had more than bread and milk, as you will soon see."

"Moore's and stay, until the surprise comes."

― Gertrude Chandler Warner, The Boxcar Children

About the Author

American author Gertrude Chandler Warner (1890–1979) wrote several stories for children, and her 1924 book, The Box-Car Children, was so successful that she published 18 sequels. The series' popularity has continued to grow: there are currently 150 other books, written by many authors, as well as two animated films. Warner was also a schoolteacher who read the original story to her classes and rewrote it many times to make sure that it would be both engaging and easy to read. She noted that the book "raised a storm of protest from librarians who thought the children were having too good a time without any parental control! That is exactly why children like it!" --This text refers to an alternate kindle_edition edition.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hardcover edition with blue cover published by dover
Reviewed in the United States on January 16, 2021
This review is for the hardcover edition by Dover Publications. I added pictures so people could see the size of the book and text.
There are only four pictures in the whole book, in black and white. They are attributed to Dorothy Lake Gregory, but I wouldn't consider the book to be illustrated to be honest.
And the book is different in small but obvious ways from the mass produced version many are familiar with, notably the death of a drunk father in the beginning. There's a broader vocabulary as well, and changes quite a few scenes. But the essence of the story is the same!
