This was a readers book. I picked it to read because I am having to wait for a new Mark Greany book to be published and I needed something similar in the genre. And I picked correctly. I was happy with the characters, backgrounds and story. And I was happy to see that there were more to the series. If you can't take the good guy being good and winning the good fight then this may not be the book for you.

A good old American spy thriller

I somehow doubt that the CIA actually has a policy of killing off their own secret agents once their usefulness expires, and I also find it hard to believe that infiltrating Russia's most secure buildings would be quite as easy as depicted in the book.
However, apart from a few stretches of the imagination like these, there is a lot to the story that does ring true, and the action and suspense is constant from page 1.
The Americans are the good guys (mostly), and the Russians are the bad guys (with some notable exceptions), so make sure you're OK with that before starting.
Most of the tension does get resolved rather satisfyingly at the end of the book, but not quite all, thus teasing the reader to purchase Book 2.
There is some violence, torture and hinted sensuality, but nothing very graphic.
All in all, a very enjoyable read!

This novel follows several agents/assassins in the US and the Russian Federation and the plot is so exciting and believable that it could be as if it was released by the NY Times and major TV networks. And best of all is that I just bought book number 2 in the series. I'd give this book 10 stars.

First off I have to warn you that this book ends on a bit of a cliffhanger. I’m used to that sort of thing in the comic books that I read but not in novels. But it was still a good book. I’d call it a Cold War thriller if it was still that era but instead it’s a thriller with the Russian government as the bad guys and a US secret agency as the good guys. Intrigue, violence, and a bio weapon that could end civilization drive the plot as a betrayed Russian “Widow” agent and a reluctantly returning CIA (sort off) asset get caught up in a series of events they have to navigate. Plenty of characters and action.

I thought that I was reading the first of a series of novels and, until the end, it was a good read. Then I was startled to suddenly find that I had been reading only the first chapter of a story and if I wanted to know how the story continued, I needed to buy the next book. This actually put me off buying the second Lance Spector novel. If the author is genuinely interested in feedback as he suggests, this is something he should note; a few days earlier I was ready to buy the second in the 'series' but now I will look for another story.

I dont like the "perils of pauline type" type of book . I wont be buying a book by instalments which will jst ramble on the same dreary stuff.
If i can avoid it...no way .. i like a book that finishes at the end, no., i want my book to be complete even if its crap.. This one was the Russians again. These books have identical plots , the only things that change are the names of the heros and villains. Its like the same guy writing them all, from jack Ryan to Alex King This author is off of my list but ill probably fall for it again.
Thev story rambled on with unbelievable plots . I dont sleep at night and read lots of these kindle books much to my shame. .

I love thrillers and when I finished the latest Mitch Rapp instalment Amazon suggested Saul Herzog's first novel as my next read. I downloaded a free Kindle sample and was hooked within a few pages.
Saul writes with an engaging free style. His characters are credible and he has such a talent for dialogue too. I particularly like the way he introduces the reader to a location or an event or a new character by starting with a seemingly insignificant detail and, as if in a film, pulling the camera back, allowing the viewer (reader) to take in the bigger picture before focusing on the new character in their context.
The novel's plot is clever and well researched - I learned a lot of fascinating facts about history, Cold War politics, Paleontology and more but never felt the author was preaching to me. The novel is very accessible - I recommend you give it a go! I'm so pleased I discovered this book and can't wait to see how the story develops in the next instalment.

I came across this author by chance and I have to say it was absolutely tremendous. The characters are believable and the plot is gripping from beginning to end. I have read one spy novel by Robert Ludlum which I found very heavy but this was a page turner. I have just finished the 5th in the series, "The Splinter", and all five have been gripping. About to buy the 6th. What more could I say?

Bang up to date and with pulse racing action scenes and taut dialogue, the phrase page turner has never been more apt. Settings are brought vibrantly to life and characterisation is the strongest I have seen in a thriller for some time. The fact that this is just the opener in a, at present, seven book series is the proverbial icing on the cake. A thriller with real gusto.
