I'm actually to the point that I'm considering bailing on the rest of this series. When I start skimming through most of a book, then we have a serious problem. This is especially bothersome if I've been paying full price for the book in question. I'm thinking that in order to give the rest of this series a shot, I'll have to wait until/unless I can get them on the cheap. The series started out wonderfully, so it's a shame that things have deteriorated like this.
Andreas Reichen is on the hunt for vengeance against his family. He has hunted down all the men responsible for their deaths and now there's only one enemy left alive. Unfortunately, the man is mated to the one woman Andrea ever loved and now he has to use her to find him.
Andreas is no longer the charming and easy going man from the previous books. He is now filled with anger and vengeance, which just feeds the power of his fire ability. He is determined to use his old love Claire against her husband but she has other plans. She actively challenges him and tries to make him rethink his decision of vengeance. Claire was such a compassionate woman and I really liked her determination to save Andreas. Also her ability to walk through dreams was interesting.
I really enjoyed these two and their emotional story. It blended well with the overall story, which progressed a lot in this book. We are one step closer to a confrontation with Dragos. Also is also a major update with the ancient one at the end of this book and I can’t wait to see how that progresses. Overall, this was a great couple with some great story progression.
- References to the kidnapping, abuse, and forced impregnation of women.
- References and a brief flashback of Andres’s entire family being murdered, children included in the scene.
I enjoyed this story. Andre & Claire don't come from the warrior background. They were " civilians".
As to the ending it was excellent, so many ways for this to play out. I'm looking forward to the " one on one" chat that Dragos & his grandpa are going to have one of these days. ~P~

Andreas is seeking revenge for the horrors that he has experienced, despite the personal risk it places him under. Claire wants to steer him away from the dangerous path that he has chosen.
The Order is still trying to track down The Ancient One. They are becoming increasingly worried as they are beginning to find out more about the atrocities committed by The Ancient One and his grandson. They need to track down this evil before mankind, as well as Breed, are threatened even more than they already are.
Lara Adrian obviously immerses herself in her work whilst she is writing ~ I was amused by a line whereby, instead of calling Danika by her name, she calls her "the tall blond female" as The Breed would have done.
There is a scene where Andreas is praying in the compound's chapel, Claire goes to him and they have sex. This is the second time that the author has had her characters make love in a Holy Place, which makes me wonder if she is trying to make a point of some sort.
I thought that this book seemed longer than the other books so far, slower paced. I enjoyed it nonetheless. Tegan, my favourite Warrior so far also pops up quite a bit in this story, along with other now familiar characters.
Most of the action in this book takes place in Berlin, Germany. In Veil of Midnight we saw Andreas Richen's entire family slaughtered under the orders of Andreas' arch-enemy Wilhelm Roth. A devestated Andreas is now determined to avenge their deaths no matter what it costs him. His search for Wilhelm takes him to Claire Roth - Wilhelm's breedmate and the only woman Andreas has ever loved. Andreas is unsure if Claire is aware of her breedmates's part in the slaughter of his family but he needs to use her bloodbond to find Wilhelm.
I wasn't too sure how this would work considering Claire was already mated to another Breed member but it was well written & the feelings between Andreas & Claire were believable. I enjoyed seeing the other Warriors & their Breedmates again and there was a fantastic amount of action in this installment of the series. Andreas' unique ability (passed to him by his mother) added an interesting dimension to the story. If you're a fan of the Midnight Breed series then I'm sure you'll love this book. If you are new to the series then I highly recommend it but you really do need to start at the beginning of the series.
