I LOVED "21 Jump Street" when it was originally aired on Fox and taped it loyally every Sunday night (to friends and loved ones - "get away from the TV, it's time for 21 Jump Street!"). I was very excited to find out the show was being released on DVD. I don't pre-order often, but I did with this one. It is such a fun, yet many times serious series; I was always impressed by the 800# hot line promos after "issues" shows. The characters and the actors playing them are great - very talented and a great mix. A few complaints though: 1) the DVD quality isn't the best, but I can live with it, 2) the replacement music isn't as good but if the producers couldn't get the licensing, I'm still glad they released the series, and 3) the one that really makes me cringe - the unrealistic euphemistic choice of words - "heck", "gosh", "gol darn", and some even worse I don't remember at the moment. If the writers/network/producers don't want to say "hell", fine - but then have the tough guy character say "Let's get outta here" with attitude and tone rather than "Let's get the heck out of here". Oh please... Nobody in my high school would ever have said "heck" and as you see from a statement in the next paragraph, I'm a bit older than the average mid-80s teenager.
Besides those few things, I absolutely LOVED my trip down memory lane - and will visit often, I'm sure. I was especially pleased to have the episode "Don't Pet The Teacher" on the DVD - I'd forgotten which year it originally aired, but of course my VCR or the tape or whatever messed up and I never got that one recorded; it was my favorite - I could have told you what the title of that episode was without having seen it listed or played (even after all this time), having tried unsuccessfully to catch it on repeats at the time - so what a great surprise for me that it was in Season One! The interviews were very good. And, while I always knew I was a good bit older than the show's usual viewers, I was somewhat horrified to hear the producer say that the targeted age group was 11-17 (oh dear God - I was 30 then and am 47 now!). Oh well - Hanson, Penhall, Ioki, Hoffs, Fuller, Jenko, Booker and Blowfish all still have my heart! Can't wait to watch Season Two! Season Three comes out in August! JUMP!!
